Why visit Khar Us Nuur National Park?

Khar Us Nuur National Park is a protected area in western Mongolia, located in Hovd Province north-east of the provincial capital Khovd city. The park centres on Khar Us Lake ("Black Water Lake"), Mongolia's second-largest freshwater lake, which forms part of a large lake system within the Great Lakes Depression between the Altai and Khangai mountain ranges. The lake and its surrounding wetlands provide critical habitat for hundreds of thousands of migratory waterbirds.

The climate is continental and arid: cold winters (-20 to -30°C), warm summers (20-25°C), and very low precipitation. June through August is the best time to visit, when temperatures are comfortable and bird populations are at their peak.

Khar Us Nuur is of global importance for bird conservation. The lake and its marshy fringes are a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and an Important Bird Area (IBA). It hosts breeding colonies of Dalmatian pelicans, great cormorants, spoonbills, black storks, whooper swans, and numerous duck and wader species. The park also supports a variety of mammals, including gazelles, foxes, wolves, and, in the surrounding hills, the endangered snow leopard.

What are the things to do?

  • Khar Us Lake — A vast, shallow freshwater lake stretching across the valley floor. Its turquoise waters, backed by the Altai Mountains, create a stunning landscape.

  • Waterbird Colonies — Huge breeding colonies of Dalmatian pelicans and great cormorants on the lake's islands are a highlight for birdwatchers. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope.

  • Boat Excursions — Local fishermen may offer boat trips on the lake (bring your own life jacket).

  • Photography — The combination of mountain backdrop, vast sky, and abundant birdlife makes this a paradise for wildlife photographers.
