Plaine des Papayes

Plaine des Papayes (Papaya Plain) is an inland village in the Rivière du Rempart District of northern Mauritius, surrounded by vast sugarcane fields. It is a quiet agricultural settlement where the pace of life follows the rhythm of the sugar cane growing and harvest seasons. The village offers a genuine glimpse of rural Mauritius.

Plaine des Papayes is 3 km south of Goodlands on a secondary road. Buses from Goodlands serve the village at regular intervals. A taxi from Goodlands costs around MUR 150.

The village is small and easily explored on foot. The lanes through the sugarcane fields are pleasant for walking.

The surrounding sugarcane fields stretch across the flat alluvial plain. The village church and the small local market are community landmarks.
