Mahebourg

Mahébourg is a historic fishing town on the southeast coast of Mauritius, situated on the shores of Grand Port bay. Founded by the Dutch in the 17th century, it was the landing site of the first Dutch settlers and the scene of the famous Battle of Grand Port in 1810 — the only French naval victory over the British during the Napoleonic Wars. Today Mahébourg is a charming, unpretentious town with a lively waterfront market, a well-regarded museum, and a distinctly local atmosphere.

Mahébourg is 5 km west of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU). The A2 road connects the town to the airport and to Curepipe. Buses from Port Louis, Curepipe, and Centre de Flacq serve the town regularly.

The town centre, market, and waterfront are walkable. Buses and taxis connect to Blue Bay, Pointe d'Esny, and the airport.

• National History Museum — housed in a French colonial villa (1771), this museum displays Mauritian naval history, natural history, and the famous dodo skeleton.
• Mahébourg Waterfront — a bustling market area along the bay, with fishing boats and food stalls.
• Grand Port — the historic bay where the 1810 battle took place, with a monument.
• Lion Mountain — a distinctive peak overlooking the town, shaped like a crouching lion.

Explore the waterfront market (most lively on Monday). Visit the National History Museum. Take a boat trip on the bay. Walk along the seafront promenade.

Mahébourg is famous for its street food — try the local boulettes (dumplings), gateaux piments, and farata at the waterfront. Several Creole restaurants serve excellent seafood.

Fresh juice stalls along the waterfront sell alouda, sugarcane juice, and coconut water. Small cafés serve coffee and soft drinks.

• Budget: Blue Lagoon Hotel (MUR 1,500–3,000) — basic guesthouse near the waterfront.
• Mid-range: Manisa Hotel (MUR 3,000–5,000) — simple but comfortable.
• Upscale: Astroea Beach Hotel (MUR 6,000–10,000) — seaside hotel near Blue Bay.

The Mahébourg market is one of the best on the island for fresh fish, fruit, spices, and local crafts. The town also has several souvenir shops.

Blue Bay (5 km east) — marine park with glass-bottom boat tours and snorkelling. Pointe d'Esny (4 km east) — calm swimming beach. Vieux Grand Port (3 km west) — historic battle site.
