Overview

Capellen is a canton in southwestern Luxembourg, forming part of the country's industrial heartland along the borders with Belgium and France. The canton stretches across gently rolling farmland, forested hills, and river valleys, with the Mamer and Eisch rivers cutting through its landscape. Its proximity to Luxembourg City — the capital lies just east of the canton — makes Capellen both a commuter belt and a distinct area with its own character.

The canton's towns grew around iron and steel industries in the 19th century, and traces of this industrial heritage remain in the architecture of Steinfort, Bascharage, and Mamer. Today, the area is predominantly residential and agricultural, with expanding commercial zones attracting logistics and technology firms drawn by Luxembourg's business-friendly environment.

Despite its modest profile compared to Luxembourg's more famous northern Ardennes region, Capellen offers quiet countryside, well-preserved villages with Romanesque churches, and a network of walking and cycling trails through the valleys of the Eisch and Mamer rivers. The canton is an easy day trip from Luxembourg City and provides a relaxed alternative to the capital's urban intensity.

When to Visit

Capellen is best visited from April to October, when the countryside is green and walking trails are dry. May and June offer wildflowers in the meadows and long daylight hours, while September brings harvest festivals and mild temperatures around 15–20°C.

Winter (December–February) is cold and grey, with occasional snow dustings, though Christmas markets in nearby Luxembourg City make a winter visit worthwhile as a side trip. The canton's indoor attractions — museums, castles, and churches — are accessible year-round.

Local festivals cluster around the summer months, with village fêtes in Mamer, Kehlen, and Steinfort typically held between June and September. These are small-scale, family-friendly affairs with food stalls, live music, and fairground rides.

The A6 motorway runs through the canton, linking it to the capital (about 20 minutes by car) and to the Belgian border at Arlon. Regular bus services operated by RGTR connect the canton's towns to each other and to Luxembourg City's central station.

Cycling is practical on the canton's quiet rural roads and dedicated cycle paths, particularly along the Eisch valley. Cuisine

Capellen's food culture reflects Luxembourg's broader culinary traditions: hearty, Franco-Germanic fare built around pork, potatoes, and river fish. Judd mat Gaardebounen (smoked pork collar with broad beans) is the national dish and appears on menus across the canton. Bouneschlupp (bean soup with bacon) and Gromperekichelcher (crispy potato fritters) are ubiquitous comfort foods.

The Brasserie de Bascharage offers craft beers brewed locally, while traditional restaurants in Kehlen and Mamer serve Luxembourgish classics alongside French-influenced dishes. Italian and Portuguese restaurants reflect the canton's immigrant communities. For casual dining, bakeries sell Quetschentaart (plum tart) in autumn and local pastries year-round. Markets in Mamer and Steinfort stock regional cheeses, cured meats, and seasonal produce from surrounding farms.

Culture & Festivals

Capellen's cultural calendar revolves around village fêtes held in each municipality during summer. The largest is the Mamer summer fair, typically in late summer, with food stalls, live bands, and fairground attractions drawing visitors from across the canton.

Koerich Castle hosts occasional open-air concerts and cultural events during the warmer months. The canton's Romanesque churches — particularly those in Kehlen, Dippach, and Mamer — are part of Luxembourg's broader Valley of the Seven Castles heritage trail along the Eisch river. Local traditions include the Buergbrennen bonfire on the first Sunday of Lent, a community celebration across Luxembourg where large fires are lit on hilltops to mark the end of winter.
