Utena
Utenos apskritis, Lithuania
Why visit Utena?
Utena is a city in northeastern Lithuania, the administrative centre of Utenos apskritis (Utena County) and the largest city in the Aukštaitija ethnographic region. With a population of around 25,600 (2023), it is an industrial hub set in a landscape of rolling hills, forests, and lakes — a gateway to the lake district of eastern Lithuania. The city is known for its textile, food-processing, and metalworking industries, but it also offers several cultural and natural attractions for visitors.
First mentioned in 1261, Utena has a long history as a regional trading centre. Much of its historic wooden architecture was lost in fires and wartime destruction, but the modern city retains a pleasant, green character with wide boulevards, parks, and the Utenaitis River flowing through its centre. The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn (May to September), when the surrounding lake region is ideal for outdoor activities. Winters are cold with regular snowfall.
