Utenos apskritis, Lithuania
Why visit Dukstas?
Dūkštas is a small town in northeastern Lithuania, in the Utenos apskritis region, situated near the shores of Lake Dūkštas and close to the border with Belarus and Latvia. With a population of around 800, it is a quiet rural settlement that serves as a local centre for the surrounding agricultural and forested area. The town is part of the Zarasai district municipality.
Dūkštas was first mentioned in the 17th century and grew as a village around a road junction. In the 19th century, the Warsaw–Saint Petersburg Railway line was built through the area, establishing a railway station that brought modest development. The town's character is defined by its lakeside setting, its railway heritage, and the surrounding forests of the Aukštaitija highlands. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the weather is suitable for outdoor activities and lake swimming.
