Zarasai

Utenos apskritis, Lithuania

Why visit Zarasai?

Zarasai is a town in northeastern Lithuania, in the Utenos apskritis region, situated on an isthmus between three lakes — Zarasas, Zarasaitis, and Gėžinis. With a population of around 6,000, it is a popular summer resort destination known for its picturesque lake setting, sandy beaches, and water sports. The town lies near the borders of Latvia and Belarus, making it a gateway to the Baltic lake district.

First mentioned in the 14th century, Zarasai was influenced by the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and later the Russian Empire. The town centre retains a 19th-century layout with a central square and a neo-Gothic church. The best time to visit is from June to August, when the lakes are warm, the beaches are busy, and the town comes alive with summer festivals. Winters offer opportunities for ice fishing and cross-country skiing on the frozen lakes.
