Visaginas

Utenos apskritis, Lithuania

Why visit Visaginas?

Visaginas is a town in eastern Lithuania, in the Utenos apskritis region, located near the border with Belarus and Latvia. With a population of around 18,000, it is one of Lithuania's newest towns, built in the 1970s as a planned settlement for workers at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. Unlike most Lithuanian towns, Visaginas has a distinctly Soviet architectural character, with wide boulevards, apartment blocks, and a predominantly Russian-speaking population — the result of its construction as a "closed" nuclear city.

Since the decommissioning of the nuclear plant in 2009, Visaginas has faced economic challenges and population decline. However, its setting among forests and lakes offers outdoor recreation opportunities, and its unique history as a Soviet atomic town attracts visitors interested in industrial heritage and urban exploration. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the lakes are warm for swimming and the surrounding forests are accessible.
