About Neringa
Neringa is a municipality that encompasses most of the Lithuanian side of the Curonian Spit, the remarkable 99-km peninsula of sand dunes separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. The municipality includes the resort town of Nida, the village of Juodkrantė, and the smaller settlements of Pervalka and Preila. Neringa had a population of 3,530 residents in 2020.
The area has traditionally been German-speaking, part of Prussia from 1701. Its fishing villages and haunting landscape of sand dunes drew artists in the 19th century, and in the 1930s it was the summer home of novelist Thomas Mann. The population was deported after the Second World War, and the Lithuanian communists turned it into a private holiday resort for party officials, a sort of "Sandals Soviet Socialist Republic," so Neringa was little developed and its old buildings preserved.
Today Neringa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, valued for its unique sand-dune ecosystem, traditional fishing villages, and cultural landscape. The best time to visit is June through September, when the beaches are most inviting and the dunes are bathed in warm light. The area is also beautiful in autumn, when the pine forests turn golden.

Things to do
Nida Gliding School site (in the area south of Five Hills) — a commemorative sign marks where Lithuania's first glider training area was established in 1933, taking advantage of the dunes for launch.
Five Hills Stone Age Settlement (Nidos akmens amžiaus Penkių kalvelių gyvenvietė) — a 4,000-year-old archaeological site that yielded valuable knowledge about the Bay Coast people of the Baltic. An explanatory sign stands in the forest.
Old cemetery of the Nida (Nidos kopų apželdintojų senosios kapinės) — where the GD Kuwert graves can be found; father and son who began the systematic replanting of the sand dunes in the 19th century.
Nida Lighthouse (Nidos švyturys) — weekends (plus W–Th mid-June to mid-Sept), usually 12:00–18:00. A 27-m concrete tower, rebuilt in 1953 after the original 1874 tower was sabotaged in wartime. Run by the History Museum.
RC Church of St Mary, Taikos g 17 (west of the pier) — built in 2003 in retro-wooden style.
Fisherman's Homestead — a traditional thatched-roof cottage by the pier, demonstrating the lifestyle of the Curonian Spit's fishing community.
Cycling the Curonian Spit — the dedicated cycle path runs from Smiltynė south to Nida, passing through pine forests, along towering dunes, and past small fishing villages. The 30-km stretch from Nida to Juodkrantė is particularly scenic.
Walk the Parnidis Dune — one of the largest accessible dunes on the spit, with a viewing platform offering panoramic views of the lagoon and the Baltic.
Visit the Thomas Mann House in Nida — the summer retreat of the Nobel laureate, now a museum and cultural centre.
Take a boat trip on the Curonian Lagoon to see the spit from the water and observe birdlife in the reed beds.
