Klaipėdos apskritis

Klaipėdos apskritis (Klaipėda County) occupies Lithuania's narrow coastal strip along the Baltic Sea, stretching from the Latvian border in the north to the Curonian Lagoon and the Russian border in the south. It is the country's westernmost county and the only one with direct access to the open sea, making it Lithuania's premier maritime region. The landscape is defined by the Curonian Spit — a 99-kilometre UNESCO-listed sand-dune peninsula — the Curonian Lagoon, pine-fringed dunes, and flat farmland inland.

The county seat, Klaipėda, is Lithuania's third-largest city and one of the few ice-free ports on the eastern Baltic. The city bears the imprint of its Prussian past: the name "Memel" was used for centuries before Lithuania annexed the territory in 1923. Today Klaipėda blends modern port industry with a reconstructed half-timbered old town and serves as the gateway to the Curonian Spit.

Beyond Klaipėda, the county encompasses the charming spa town of Palanga on the Baltic coast, the historic town of Kretinga, and the quiet, marshy landscapes around Šilutė and Rusne. Nature lovers are drawn to the dunes of Nida and Neringa, the bird-rich Nemunas Delta, and the coastal forests that shelter elk, red deer, and beavers. Klaipėdos apskritis is an ideal base for beach holidays, wildlife watching, cycling, and exploring Lithuania's distinctive coastal heritage.

Summer (June–August) is the peak season, with beachgoers flocking to Palanga and the Curonian Spit. Temperatures average 17–20 °C, though sea breezes keep the coast cooler than inland. The Palanga Music Festival and the Klaipėda Sea Festival both take place in July, drawing large crowds. July and August also bring the longest daylight hours — up to 17 hours — perfect for extended outdoor activities.

Spring (April–May) and early autumn (September) offer milder crowds and pleasant walking weather. Spring is excellent for birdwatching in the Nemunas Delta as migratory species pass through. Autumn brings the golden hues of the coastal forests and fewer tourists at Nida.

Winter (November–March) is cold, with temperatures often below freezing and occasional snow, but the Baltic coast takes on a stark beauty. The Klaipėda Christmas Market lights up the old town from late November, and the quiet dunes have a haunting atmosphere. Pack warm layers and waterproof gear for the unpredictable coastal weather.

Klaipėda's bus and railway stations sit adjacent to each other on Butkų Juzės gatvė, forming the county's main transport hub. Frequent buses connect Klaipėda to Palanga (25 min), Šilutė (1 hr), and Kretinga (20 min). Vlasava, Kautra, and Toks bus companies operate hourly services to Vilnius (4 hr) and Kaunas (3 hr).

Trains run from Klaipėda to Vilnius (4½ hr, €25), and four local trains per day serve Šilutė (1 hr). Kaunas is reachable via Vilnius or Šiauliai in about 5 hours. Palanga Airport (PLQ), 36 km north, has seasonal Ryanair and Norwegian flights; Bus 31 links the airport to Klaipėda every 30 minutes.

For getting around within Klaipėda city, buses 8 and 9 cover the main north–south spine. Taxis can be summoned via the eTAKSI app (+370 633 44 553), with flagfall €1 and €0.80/km. Two ferry routes cross to Smiltynė on the Curonian Spit: the old ferry terminal for foot passengers (€1.50 single, 5 min) and the new terminal for vehicles (car €20.50, every 20 min).

Cycling is excellent on the Curonian Spit, with bike rental available from Du ratai near the old ferry terminal. The spit's dedicated cycle path runs from Smiltynė south to Nida, passing through pine forests and along towering dunes.

The county's cuisine is shaped by its Baltic coast and Prussian heritage. Fresh herring, smoked eel, and pike-perch (stinta) from the Curonian Lagoon are staples, often served with rye bread and sour cream. Cepelinai (potato dumplings) are the national dish and appear on menus throughout the region, but the coastal towns also specialise in fish soups and smoked preparations.

Palanga's Jūros alėja (Sea Avenue) is lined with restaurants serving Lithuanian and international fare. Žuvies kepyklėlė on the Klaipėda waterfront is known for its grilled fish, while the Palanga Fish Market (at the pier) offers freshly caught produce. In Klaipėda's old town, try šakotis (tree cake) from a traditional bakery.

Dietary considerations: vegetarian options are increasingly available in urban restaurants, though rural menus tend to be meat- and fish-heavy. Gluten-free choices can be limited in smaller towns.

The Klaipėda Sea Festival (Klaipėdos jūros šventė) is the county's signature event, held in late July. It features ship parades, maritime ceremonies, folk music, and fireworks over the harbour. The Palanga Music Festival (July) brings classical and contemporary performances to the resort town.

In winter, the Klaipėda Christmas Market transforms the old town with mulled wine, local crafts, and traditional treats. Kretinga hosts the Žemaitija Folklore Festival, celebrating the traditions of the Samogitian region. The Amber Museum in Palanga runs seasonal exhibitions linking amber to Baltic folklore and trade.

Traditional crafts include amber jewellery, linen weaving, and wooden folk sculpture. The region's musical heritage features the sutartinės polyphonic singing tradition, which has UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status.
