Ghadames
Nālūt, Libya
About Ghadames
Ghadames (also spelled Ghadamis) is an historic oasis town in the Nālūt district of western Libya, approximately 400 km southwest of Tripoli near the borders of Algeria and Tunisia. It is known as "the Pearl of the Desert" and its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old city is a masterpiece of Saharan architecture: covered, whitewashed streets that provide shade and natural air conditioning; multi-storey houses with rooftop terraces connected by bridges; and thick mud-brick walls that keep interiors cool. The town was a major Trans-Saharan trade hub, connecting Tripoli to sub-Saharan Africa. The modern settlement was built adjacent to the old town in the 1970s, but residents still retreat to the old city during the peak of summer heat. The climate is extreme desert: summers exceed 45°C, while winter days are warm (20°C) and nights are cold.
