Overview

Nālūt is a popularate in northwestern Libya, bordering Tunisia and Algeria. It is named after the historic Amazigh town of Nalut, one of the largest settlements in the Nafusa Mountains. The district includes the famous UNESCO World Heritage oasis town of Ghadames, the "Pearl of the Desert," with its distinctive covered alleyways and ancient mud-brick architecture. The landscape ranges from the limestone escarpment of the Nafusa Mountains to the vast sandy plains of the Sahara. The population is predominantly Amazigh (Berber), and Tamazight is widely spoken alongside Arabic. The district was historically a crossroads of Trans-Saharan trade routes, connecting the Mediterranean coast to the interior of Africa via Ghadames.

When to Visit

October to April is best. The mountains are cooler than the desert plains. Ghadames is extremely hot in summer (45°C+) but the covered streets provide natural air conditioning.
