Vitina

Gjilan District, Kosovo

About Vitina

Vitina (Albanian) or Kosovska Vitina (Serbian) is a small town of roughly 5,000 inhabitants in the southern part of Gjilan District, eastern Kosovo. The town sits in an agricultural valley surrounded by rolling hills, and its economy has traditionally been centred on farming — particularly fruit and vegetable production. Vitina is known for its annual agricultural fair, one of the oldest and most important in Kosovo.

The town has a quiet, unhurried character typical of rural Kosovo. The Kosovska Vitina Monastery, a 14th-century Serbian Orthodox foundation, is the most significant historical site in the area, though it has suffered damage and is not always open to visitors. The surrounding countryside is pleasant for walking and cycling, with orchards, vineyards, and small villages dotting the landscape.

Vitina has a continental climate: hot summers (30–35 °C), cold winters (–5 to 5 °C). The best time to visit is spring through autumn, when the agricultural landscape is at its most vibrant and the town's outdoor life is active.
