Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and is recognised by 117 UN member states, including the US, UK, and most EU members; Serbia, Russia, China, and five EU member states do not recognise it. The status makes some borders complicated — the Serbian border requires care for travellers who enter Kosovo first (Serbia does not recognise Kosovo entry stamps as valid entry). Kosovo uses the Euro as its currency despite not being an EU member.
Kosovo is a small, mountainous, landlocked country — the youngest in Europe, with the youngest population (average age 28). Pristina is a chaotic, energetic, and surprisingly cosmopolitan capital. The Orthodox monasteries of Visoki Dečani (UNESCO) and the Patriarchate of Peć represent the most important Serbian medieval cultural heritage in the country; they are protected by KFOR (NATO forces). The Sharr Mountains in the south and the Rugova Canyon in the west offer hiking.
Geography & Climate
Kosovo is landlocked, surrounded by Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania, and Montenegro. The Sharr Mountains border North Macedonia; the Western Balkans range borders Montenegro and Albania. The climate is continental — cold winters, hot summers; Pristina is at 652m altitude.

WhatsAppWhen to Visit
May–September for hiking and outdoor activities. December–March for skiing on the Sharr Mountain slopes. Year-round for the monasteries.
Visa & Entry
Many Western nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada) can enter visa-free for 90 days. Entry via Serbia first and Kosovo second can cause issues at the Serbian border — enter Kosovo from North Macedonia or Albania if planning to visit both countries.

We handle the bookings and budgeting — you just travel.
WhatsAppGetting Around
Minibuses (furgon) connect the main towns. Car rental is available in Pristina. The road between Pristina and Peć passes through the spectacular Rugova Canyon.
Culture & Etiquette
- Kosovo is majority Albanian-speaking; Serbian is spoken by the Serb minority in the north
- The relationship between Kosovo Albanians and the Kosovo War (1998–99) is recent and personal — be sensitive
- "Newborn" sculpture (in central Pristina) and Bill Clinton Boulevard (named for the US president who ordered the NATO bombing that ended the war) are cultural landmarks
- The young population and café culture make Pristina surprisingly vibrant in the evenings
