About Sharr Mountains National Park
Sharr Mountains National Park (Albanian: Parku Kombëtar i Sharrit) covers approximately 53,000 hectares of rugged alpine terrain in southern Kosovo, extending from near Prizren in the west to Kaçanik in the east, along the Kosovo–North Macedonia border. The park encompasses some of the highest and most dramatic scenery in Kosovo, with peaks reaching over 2,600 m (the highest being Bistra at 2,651 m) and deep glacial valleys carved during the last ice age.
The park is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the Balkans, home to brown bears, wolves, lynx, chamois, and over 150 bird species. The flora includes alpine meadows thick with wildflowers in June and July, dense beech and fir forests at lower elevations, and rocky high-altitude zones with endemic plant species. The park was designated in 2013 and remains relatively undeveloped, with limited infrastructure but excellent opportunities for experienced hikers and nature enthusiasts.
The best time to visit is June through September, when mountain trails are accessible and wildflowers are at their peak. Winter (December–March) brings heavy snowfall, making most trails impassable but opening possibilities for backcountry skiing. The park receives significant precipitation year-round, so waterproof clothing is essential.

Ask on WhatsAppHow to reach
By Plane
Pristina Adem Jashari International Airport (PRN) is the nearest major airport, approximately 100–120 km north depending on which park entrance you use. A taxi to Prizren (the western gateway) costs roughly €25–30; to Kaçanik (eastern gateway) approximately €40–50.
By Train
There is no train service to the park. The nearest stations are at Prizren (15 km from the western entrance) and Kaçanik (20 km from the eastern entrance). From either, a taxi or hired car is needed to reach trailheads.
By Car / Road
The park is accessible from Prizren via the Prizren–Kaçanik road, which passes through the southern part of the park. From Kaçanik, the road toward Brezovica enters the park from the east. Both roads are paved but narrow and winding in places. A car is strongly recommended — there is no public transport to trailheads. Parking is available at several trail access points.
The park has no internal transport system. Visitors must hike from trailheads accessible by car or taxi. The main trails are marked but not always well-maintained; carry a detailed map (1:25,000 scale recommended) and GPS. Several multi-day hiking routes traverse the park, connecting mountain huts and campsites. For guided hikes, contact the Kosovo Tourist Guides Association ([email protected], +383 49372639).
Things to do
Bistra Peak (2,651 m) — the highest point in the park, offering panoramic views across Kosovo and North Macedonia; a full-day hike from the nearest trailhead
Šar Lakes (Liqenet e Sharrit) — a cluster of glacial lakes at approximately 2,100 m elevation, some of the most scenic spots in Kosovo
Mavrovo connection — the park connects to Mavrovo National Park in North Macedonia, creating a transboundary wilderness corridor
Medvedica Cave — a karst cave system near the western boundary, with stalactites and underground streams
Traditional mountain villages — scattered hamlets in the park's lower elevations where shepherds still practice transhumance (seasonal mountain grazing)
Hiking: The park offers trails ranging from easy riverside walks (2–3 hours) to multi-day treks across the mountain ridge. The Kosovo–North Macedonia ridge trail is the most challenging, taking 3–5 days
Wildlife watching: Brown bears, wolves, and chamois are present but rarely seen; dawn and dusk in meadow clearings offer the best chances
Wildflower photography: June and July bring alpine meadows into bloom — species include orchids, gentians, and edelweiss
Backcountry skiing: In winter, the park's slopes offer powder skiing for experienced backcountry skiers, though avalanche risk is significant
Camping: Wild camping is permitted in the park; designated camping areas exist near the Šar Lakes

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
No restaurants operate within the park. Pack food from Prizren or Kaçanik. Traditional mountain food that travels well includes gjizë (fresh cheese), bread, dried fruit, and cured meats. Mountain huts occasionally serve simple meals to overnight guests (€5–8 per meal). Carry a portable stove if planning multi-day treks.
Cafes & Nightlife
Spring water is abundant throughout the park and generally safe to drink directly from mountain streams at higher elevations. At lower elevations and near settlements, purify or filter water as a precaution. Bring a water purification method for backcountry trips.
