Murang'a County lies in central Kenya, in the lush highlands south of the Aberdare Range. It is part of the former Central Province and is considered the ancestral homeland of the Kikuyu people, Kenya's largest ethnic group. The county is characterised by fertile, terraced hillsides covered in tea, coffee, and banana plantations, with deep river valleys carved by the Tana and Maragua rivers.
The county capital, Murang'a town, is a historic administrative centre, while Kenol has grown into a major transport hub at the junction of the Thika–Nyeri and Murang'a–Kenyatta highways. The region is known for its role in Kenya's independence struggle (the Mau Mau movement was active here), for its productive agriculture, and as a base for accessing the Aberdare National Park and the scenic Maragua Ridge.
When is the best time to visit?
The climate is mild year-round due to the elevation (around 1,200–1,800 m). The dry months of June–September and January–March offer the best conditions for hiking and outdoor activities. The long rains (March–May) and short rains (October–November) bring heavy downpours that can make rural roads difficult but turn the landscape exceptionally green.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Murang'a is well connected to Nairobi via the A2 highway (about 1.5 hours). Matatus run frequently from Nairobi to Kenol, Murang'a town, Makuyu, and Maragua. Within the county, matatus and boda-bodas operate between all major towns. Kenol is a key transport junction with services to Nyeri and the Mount Kenya region. Most roads are tarmacked along the main corridors.

The Kikuyu people have a rich cultural heritage centred on the extended family (mbari), age-set systems, and land stewardship. Murang'a has historical significance as the birthplace of the Mau Mau movement and is home to sites related to Kenya's independence struggle. Agricultural shows and church gatherings are major community events. Traditional music and dance are performed at weddings and ceremonies.
