Shaumari Wildlife Reserve
Az Zarqa', Jordan
Why visit Shaumari Wildlife Reserve?
The Shaumari Wildlife Reserve is an RSCN-managed reserve in the eastern desert of Az Zarqā' Governorate, established in 1975 to protect endangered desert species. The reserve is famous for its Arabian oryx breeding programme, which successfully reintroduced this once-extinct-in-the-wild species back into its natural habitat. It also hosts onagers (Asian wild asses), ostriches, and gazelles.
The reserve covers 22 km² of semi-arid desert habitat with visitor facilities including a small museum and guided safari tours. The climate is arid: extremely hot summers (38–42 °C) and cold winters (0–10 °C). Spring and autumn are ideal for visits.
