Azraq
Az Zarqa', Jordan
Why visit Azraq?
Azraq is a small oasis town in the eastern desert of Az Zarqā' Governorate, 100 km east of Amman. The town is built around a historic oasis that has sustained life in the desert for millennia. Azraq is famous for its wetland reserve, its Umayyad-era castle, and its role as a gateway to the eastern desert (badia).
The oasis has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic era and was a strategic crossroads for trade routes to Iraq and Arabia. The Azraq Wetland Reserve, managed by the RSCN, protects a unique desert oasis ecosystem. The climate is arid continental: extremely hot summers (38–42 °C) and cold winters (0–10 °C), with occasional frost. Spring and autumn are ideal.
