About Shinjo

Shinjo (新庄) is a city in northern Yamagata Prefecture, serving as the region's primary transport and commercial hub. Located at the confluence of several major roads and railways, Shinjo has historically been an important gateway to the Mogami River basin and the surrounding mountains.

The city is famous for the Shinjo Matsuri, one of Japan's most spectacular summer festivals, and is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery including the nearby Funagata Mountains. Shinjo is also a centre for sake brewing.

The climate has warm summers and cold, snowy winters with heavy snowfall. The best times to visit are August for the Shinjo Matsuri and autumn (October) for foliage.
