Why visit Tachikawa?

Tachikawa (立川市) is a city in central Tokyo's Tama area, located about 35 km west of central Tokyo. It is a major commercial and transportation hub for western Tokyo, centered on the large station complex that serves the JR Chuo, Ome, and Nambu Lines. Tachikawa is best known for the Showa Memorial Park (Showa Kinen Koen), one of Tokyo's largest and most beautiful parks.

The city has a modern, open feel with wide boulevards and a large pedestrian plaza in front of the station. It developed as a military base town before and during WWII, and later as a planned residential community. The US Air Force's Yokota Air Base is located nearby in Fussa.
