About Mount Mitsumine

Mount Mitsumine is a sacred peak deep in the mountains of western Saitama Prefecture, within the Chichibu district and the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. It is one of the three holy mountains of the Chichibu region, and its draw is not a summit view so much as the atmospheric shrine complex that crowns it: Mitsumine Shrine, set among towering ancient cedars at around 1,100 metres above sea level, wreathed in mountain mist and revered for centuries.

The shrine is closely associated with the okami — the Japanese wolf — which is honoured here as a guardian and messenger, and stone and bronze wolves stand in place of the usual fox or lion-dog statues at the gates. This wolf cult, together with the great cryptomeria trees, a striking triple torii gate and a reputation as a "power spot", gives Mitsumine an intensity of mood that sets it apart from more accessible shrines. The site has long been a destination for pilgrims and ascetics, and the modern visitor still feels that older purpose.

Mount Mitsumine's altitude makes it noticeably cooler than the lowlands and prone to cloud and mist, which only adds to the atmosphere. Fresh greenery in spring and vivid foliage in autumn are the most rewarding seasons; winter is cold, with snow and ice on the mountain roads. The shrine precinct is the focus of any visit, with hiking trails leading deeper into the surrounding peaks for those who want to walk.

How to reach

By Plane

By Train

There is no railway station on the mountain itself. The usual approach is to reach the Chichibu basin by the Seibu Chichibu Line from Ikebukuro to Seibu-Chichibu Station, or by the Chichibu Railway, and then continue to Mitsumineguchi at the foot of the mountain before transferring to a mountain bus up to the shrine.

By Car / Road

Mount Mitsumine is reached by winding mountain road from the Chichibu basin, with a car park near the shrine. The roads are steep and twisting; allow extra driving time and use snow tyres in winter, when ice is common at altitude.

The shrine precinct is explored entirely on foot, along stone paths and stairways through the cedar forest. Hiking trails lead from the shrine deeper into the mountains for walkers who want longer routes. There is no public transport on the mountain beyond the bus that brings visitors up; once there, the visit is a walking one. Wear sturdy footwear and warm layers, as the weather at altitude is changeable, and take care on stone steps that can be slick in mist or frost.

Things to do

  • Mitsumine Shrine — The mountain's reason for being: an atmospheric shrine complex among ancient cryptomeria trees, guarded by wolf statues rather than the usual lion-dogs, with an ornately decorated main hall and a distinctive triple torii gate. Free to enter the precinct.
  • Ancient cedar grove — Towering old cryptomeria around the shrine, including venerable named trees treated as objects of reverence.
  • Mountain viewpoints — On clear days, points around the precinct and along the trails give views over the layered ridges of the Chichibu mountains.

The central experience is simply visiting the shrine — walking the cedar-shaded approach, passing beneath the triple torii, and absorbing the unusual, slightly austere atmosphere of a true mountain sanctuary. Many visitors come specifically to receive the shrine's wolf-themed amulets and charms. Beyond the precinct, hiking is the main activity: trails climb from the shrine toward Mount Kumotori and other Chichibu peaks, suiting walkers from a gentle stroll to a multi-hour mountain route. Staying overnight at the shrine's lodging lets visitors experience the mountain at dawn, often above the cloud.

Food & Dining

Dining on the mountain is limited to the shrine's facilities and a few simple eateries near the precinct, serving warming mountain fare — noodles, rice dishes and the soba for which the Chichibu district is known. For a wider choice, eat in the town of Chichibu before heading up.

  • On the mountain: Simple restaurants and the shrine lodge dining, serving soba, udon and set meals.

Cafes & Nightlife

Refreshment on the mountain is limited to the shrine area's tea and simple drinks; full bars and cafés are found down in Chichibu, which lies in sake country and is known for craft brewing and distilling. Carry water for any hike, as resupply points are far apart. Tap water in the area is generally safe, but treat any untreated stream water before drinking.
