About Itoigawa

Itoigawa (糸魚川) is a city at the far southwestern corner of Niigata Prefecture, situated at the northern terminus of the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line—a major fault that geologically separates northeastern and southwestern Japan. This unique geology gives the area extraordinary mineral diversity, including Japan's finest jade, and has earned it designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The coastline offers dramatic views of the Sea of Japan, while the nearby mountains provide hiking and skiing. Itoigawa is best visited in spring, autumn, and summer; winters bring heavy snow along the coast.

The Fossa Magna Museum (¥500, 09:00–16:30, closed Mondays Dec–Feb) displays minerals and fossils from the tectonic line region. The Itoigawa Geopark encompasses numerous geological sites around the city, including dramatic coastal formations. The Oyashirazu area in the west marks the northernmost point of the tectonic line, with striking sea cliffs. The local Jade Museum showcases the area's renowned jade stones.

Jade hunting at Jade Beach (Hisui Kaigan) is Itoigawa's signature activity—visitors can collect jade pebbles for free (collection at the Kotakigawa River source is prohibited). The Fossa Magna Museum offers appraisal services by reservation. Hiking in the surrounding mountains provides views of the coastline and the Northern Alps. Hot springs (onsen) are found at several inns in the area.
