About Hyuga

Hyuga (日向) is a coastal city in northern Miyazaki Prefecture, facing the Pacific Ocean. It is known for its scenic coastline, including the dramatic Cape Hyuga and the Umagase rock formations, as well as its surfing beaches. Hyuga is also home to the Hyuga Shrine, a historic Shinto shrine overlooking the sea. The city has a relaxed, seaside atmosphere. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer is the peak surf and beach season.

How to reach

By Plane

Miyazaki Airport (KMI) is about 1 hour south by car or train. Oita Airport (OIT) is about 1.5 hours north.

By Train

Hyuga is on the JR Nippo Main Line. From Miyazaki Station, limited express trains take about 40 minutes (¥1,800). From Oita about 1.5 hours.

By Car / Road

Route 10 runs along the coast. From Miyazaki about 1 hour by car.

The city center and shrine area are walkable. A car is needed for the cape and coastal lookouts.

Things to do

  • Cape Hyuga (日向岬) — A dramatic headland with sea cliffs, pine forests, and the white Minami Hyuga Lighthouse.

  • Umagase (馬ヶ背) — A narrow rock ridge jutting into the sea with sheer drops on both sides. The most iconic view on the cape.

  • Hyuga Shrine (日向神社) — A historic shrine on the cape with ancient cedars.

  • Hyuga beaches — Several good surf and swimming beaches.

  • Surfing — Hyuga has consistent waves suitable for all levels.

  • Cape walking trail — Walk from the shrine to Umagase along the cliff edge.

  • Swimming — Beach season runs July–August.

  • Sunset viewing — The west-facing cape has beautiful sunsets.
