About Tatebayashi
Tatebayashi (館林市) is a city in southeastern Gunma Prefecture, located on the Tone River floodplain. It is best known for its annual Tatebayashi Festival, one of Gunma's largest and most vibrant festivals, featuring giant warrior floats (yoroi kazari yatai) that wear actual samurai armor. The city also has a well-preserved historical center and several parks.
Tatebayashi developed as a castle town during the Edo period, and though the castle no longer stands, the city retains a grid street layout and traditional merchant houses. The surrounding agricultural area is known for rice, vegetables, and flowers. The climate is typical of the Kanto plain: hot humid summers, cold winters, with pleasant spring and autumn.
