About Ota

Ota (太田市) is a city in eastern Gunma Prefecture, best known as the home of the Subaru Corporation — the automotive and aerospace company's global headquarters are here, and the city has a strong industrial character. Despite its modern manufacturing base, Ota also has deep historical roots as a castle town and as the birthplace of the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, who spent his later years here.

The city is surrounded by the scenic Mount Akagi and Mount Kiryu, offering hiking and outdoor activities. Ota has a practical, family-oriented atmosphere with good shopping and dining. The climate features hot humid summers and cold winters. Spring and autumn are pleasant.

How to reach

By Plane

Narita International Airport (NRT) is about 120 km southeast. Take the Narita Express to Tokyo Station, then the Tohoku Shinkansen to Oyama, and the JR Ryomo Line to Ota (about 2.5 hours total).

By Train

Ota Station is on the JR Ryomo Line and the Tobu Isesaki Line. From Tokyo, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Oyama (45 minutes), then the JR Ryomo Line to Ota (20 minutes). The Tobu Isesaki Line connects Ota to Asakusa (about 1 hour 40 minutes).

By Car / Road

From Tokyo, take the Tohoku Expressway to the Ota IC, about 1 hour 20 minutes. National Route 50 passes through the city.

The city center around Ota Station is walkable. Local buses serve the Subaru factory, Mount Akagi trailheads, and residential areas. Taxis are plentiful. A car is useful for exploring Mount Akagi.

  • Subaru Visitor Center — A museum and showroom showcasing Subaru's automotive and aerospace history. See concept cars, aircraft models, and factory tour information. Free entry.

  • Ota Castle Ruins — Remains of a 16th-century castle in a public park with a reconstructed turret, moat, and cherry trees.

  • Miyamoto Musashi Memorial Hall — A museum dedicated to the legendary swordsman, who lived his final years in Ota. Displays include weapons, calligraphy, and historical records.

  • Mount Akagi — A large stratovolcano with a crater lake (Lake Ono), hiking trails, ski slopes, and panoramic views of the Kanto Plain.

  • Subaru factory tour — Advance-reservation tours of the Subaru manufacturing plant (Japanese-language, with English materials available).

  • Hike Mount Akagi — Trails from various trailheads lead to the summit (1,828 m) and around the caldera lakes.

  • Ota Festival — Held in August with floats, music, and dance performances.

  • Ski or snowboard at Mount Akagi — The Akagi Kogen Ski Resort operates in winter.
