About Omuta
Omuta (大牟田) is a city in southern Fukuoka Prefecture, near the border with Kumamoto. It developed as a coal-mining center during Japan's industrialization, with the Miike Coal Mine being one of the country's largest. The mine's history is preserved at the Miike Coal Mine Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site component. Today the city has a quiet, nostalgic atmosphere. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit.
