Saint Thomas is one of Jamaica's 14 parishes, located on the island's southeastern coast. Bordered by the Blue Mountains to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south, the parish is characterised by lush tropical vegetation, rolling hills, and a rugged coastline dotted with small fishing villages. The parish capital, Morant Bay, sits on the southern shore and serves as the administrative and commercial centre.
The parish holds a significant place in Jamaican history as the site of the 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion, led by Paul Bogle, who is now celebrated as a National Hero. Saint Thomas retains a largely rural and agricultural character, with banana, coconut, and citrus cultivation dominating the landscape. The area is less developed for tourism than Jamaica's north coast, offering visitors a more authentic and quieter experience of island life.
The Blue Mountain range rises sharply in the north of the parish, creating dramatic scenery and providing opportunities for hiking and nature exploration. The Bath Fountain and Botanical Gardens, established in the 18th century, are among the parish's most notable attractions, drawing visitors to their mineral hot springs.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Saint Thomas is during the dry season from December to April, when rainfall is minimal and temperatures hover around 27–30°C. The parish experiences its heaviest rainfall from May to June and September to November, with the hurricane season running from June through November.
The parish celebrates its heritage during the Paul Bogle commemorative events in October, which include cultural performances and community gatherings. The Jamaica Carnival, held in April, also brings festivities to the wider island that can be enjoyed from Saint Thomas.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Saint Thomas is best explored by car or taxi, as public transport is limited. Route A2 runs along the coast from Kingston through Morant Bay and onward to the eastern tip of the island. The journey from Kingston to Morant Bay takes approximately 45 minutes by car.
Route taxis (shared minibuses) operate along the main coastal road, connecting Morant Bay with Port Morant, Yallahs, and other towns. Fares are inexpensive, typically JMD 150–300 per trip. For more remote areas in the hills, a private vehicle or arranged taxi is recommended, as roads can be narrow and winding.
