Bettona

Umbria, Italy

Why visit Bettona?

Bettona is a small hill town in the province of Perugia, Umbria, notable as the only Etruscan settlement on the east bank of the Tiber; it dates to the 8th–7th century BC and became a Roman municipium after conquest in the 4th century BC. Its walls, still largely intact, incorporate surviving stretches of the original Etruscan fortifications (large sandstone blocks) beneath a medieval circuit rebuilt after the town's destruction in 1352. The town's Pinacoteca Comunale, in the 14th-century Palazzetto del Podestà, holds paintings by Perugino (Pietro Vannucci), including a Madonna of Mercy, alongside works by other Umbrian Renaissance artists.
