Seborga
Liguria, Italy
Why visit Seborga?
Seborga is a hilltop village in western Liguria, overlooking the coast between Bordighera and Vallecrosia, surrounded by olive groves and terraced hillsides associated with Taggiasca olive oil and, locally, mimosa cultivation. It is best known for its curious self-proclaimed status as an independent principality: the claim dates from 1964, when the head of the local flower growers' co-operative began promoting the idea that Seborga had existed as a sovereign state since 954 and, from 1079, as a principality of the Holy Roman Empire that was never folded into the 1861 unification of Italy. The claim is not recognised by the Italian state and is generally viewed as a tourism-driven curiosity rather than a serious sovereignty dispute, but the village leans into it with its own self-styled "prince," flag, and commemorative coinage, the luigini.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
Seborga is reached by road from the coast between Bordighera and Vallecrosia, a short drive up into the hills; there is no rail station in the village itself.
The historic centre is small and pedestrian, arranged around narrow stone streets and arches climbing to Piazza San Martino.
What are the things to do?
The Church of San Martino anchors the historic centre, alongside a medieval gate and the Oratory of St Bernard, dating to the 13th century, which houses a collection of antique musical instruments. The village's old prisons, where prisoners were historically held, can be viewed from the outside. Views from the village extend over the Ligurian Sea and inland to the Maritime Alps.
