Liguria is a crescent-shaped region of Northwest Italy, nestled between the Maritime Alps, the Ligurian Apennines, and the Ligurian Sea. This narrow coastal strip stretches from the French border at Ventimiglia to La Spezia at the edge of Tuscany, encompassing two distinct rivieras: the Riviera di Ponente (west of Genoa) with its long sandy beaches, and the Riviera di Levante (east of Genoa) with its dramatic rocky coastline.
The region's capital, Genoa, is Italy's most important port and one of its most populous cities—a labyrinth of medieval caruggi (alleyways) opening onto grand Renaissance palaces. Beyond Genoa, Liguria is defined by its colorful fishing villages perched on steep cliffs, terraced hillsides producing exceptional olive oil, and a mild Mediterranean climate that makes it pleasant to visit year-round.
Liguria's greatest treasures include the UNESCO-listed Cinque Terre—five tiny fishing villages clinging to the rugged coast—and the glamorous resort of Portofino. The hinterland hides medieval villages like Triora and Apricale, where every bend in the mountain road reveals a new surprise.
When to Visit
Liguria can be visited year-round thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate. The best months are April through June and September through October, when temperatures are pleasant (18-25°C) and crowds are thinner than in summer. Spring brings wildflowers to the hillsides, while autumn is ideal for hiking the Cinque Terre trails.
Summer (July-August) is peak season, with hot temperatures (28-32°C) and crowded beaches. The Cinque Terre villages become extremely busy, with hiking trails potentially closed due to heat. Winter is mild along the coast (8-12°C) but can be cold in the mountain hinterland, where snow occasionally falls.
The Sanremo Music Festival (February) is Italy's most important music event. The Genoa Boat Show (October) attracts maritime enthusiasts. Grape harvest festivals occur in September throughout the region's wine-producing areas.

WhatsAppGetting Around
The spectacular journey along the Ligurian coast takes you through tunnel after tunnel, bursting from darkness into sunlight with the sea sparkling alongside. Trains run the entire coast, connecting all major towns. The Genoa-La Spezia line serves the Cinque Terre, while the Genoa-Ventimiglia line covers the western riviera.
By car, the A10 motorway connects Genoa to Ventimiglia along the coast, while the A12 runs from Genoa to La Spezia. The A7 connects Genoa to Milan, and the A6 links Savona to Turin. Distances: Genoa to Sanremo is 145km (1.5 hours), Genoa to La Spezia 100km (1.5 hours), Genoa to Savona 50km (45 minutes).
Ferries connect the main ports of Genoa, Savona, Imperia, and La Spezia to Sardinia, Sicily, and Corsica. Within the Cinque Terre, boats connect the villages during summer months.

WhatsAppCuisine
Ligurian cuisine is among the most refined in Italy, emphasizing fresh ingredients and simple preparations. Pesto alla Genovese originated here, made with local basil, pine nuts, garlic, Parmigiano, pecorino, and Ligurian olive oil. Farinata, a thin savory pie of chickpea flour baked in wood ovens, is a regional staple.
Signature dishes include torta di verdura (vegetable pie with borage and wild herbs), gattafin (pasta stuffed with beetroot, onion, and Parmesan), stuffed mussels with cheese and herbs, and fresh seafood preparations. Tagliatelle with walnut sauce is a classic Ligurian pasta dish.
The region produces exceptional olive oil, considered more delicate than Tuscan oil. Local wines include white Pigato and Vermentino, and the prestigious Sciacchetrà sweet passito wine from the Cinque Terre. Red wines are less common, with Rossese di Dolceacqua being the notable exception.
