Furore
Campania, Italy
Why visit Furore?
Furore, whose name means "fury" in Italian, is a scattered hill and coastal comune on the Amalfi Coast sometimes called "the town that doesn't exist" because its houses are dispersed among the rocks rather than clustered into a conventional center. Its best-known feature is the Fiordo di Furore, a narrow, deep gorge (often called a fjord) where the Schiato stream meets the sea between sheer limestone cliffs, spanned by a road bridge. Since 1983 the village has also become known for its murals: artists from Italy and abroad have decorated its walls with over a hundred works, earning it membership in the Associazione Borghi Dipinti d'Italia (Painted Villages of Italy). Like the rest of the Amalfi Coast, Furore has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, and it is also listed among Italy's Borghi più Belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages).

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
Furore is on the SS163 Amalfitana coastal road between Positano and Amalfi, served by SITA coastal buses; the fjord itself has a small landing used by seasonal boat services. There is no railway station; the nearest is in Salerno.
Furore's population is spread across scattered hamlets rather than one center, so getting between the fjord, the upper village, and viewpoints generally requires walking steep paths or driving the coastal road.
What are the things to do?
The Fiordo di Furore, a narrow limestone gorge where the Schiato stream reaches the sea, spanned by a high road bridge with views down into the inlet, is the main sight. The scattered village itself, with its painted house walls contributed by artists since 1983, is worth wandering for the murals.
Viewing and swimming at the fjord (weather and access permitting), walking the village's scattered lanes to see the murals, and hiking trails in the hills above are the main activities.
