Damavand

Damavand (دماوند) is an ancient town in Damavand County, Tehran province, sitting at 1,800–2,250 m on the southern slope of the Emāmzāda Hāšem pass, on the routes linking Tehran to Āmol and Sārī. It is the closest sizeable town to Mount Damavand (5,671 m), Iran's highest peak, a dormant stratovolcano and a recurring figure in Persian mythology (the legendary tyrant Zahhāk is said to have been chained inside it). The town's own name appears in Sassanid-era texts as "Dunbawand," and Parthian-period remains have been found in the area; it fell to Arab Muslim forces during the conquest of Iran in 651 CE. Its historical core is unusually dense for its size — local surveys count dozens of Imamzadeh tombs, castle ruins, traditional houses, bathhouses, caves, bridges, and caravanserais scattered through the district, though most are minor sites without visitor infrastructure. The surrounding area has a humid continental climate: hot summers, very cold snowy winters, and cool, rainy springs and autumns, with an average annual temperature around 9.6 °C. The local economy is agricultural — apples, pears, cherries, apricots, walnuts, and Damavand honey are among the area's known produce.

Damavand is reached by road from Tehran via the Firuzkuh road (through Gilavand) or via the Haraz road (through Mosha).

Jameh (Friday) Mosque: a Seljuq-era mosque incorporating traces of Sassanid-period architecture, with a later inscription bearing the name of Safavid ruler Ismail I. Sheikh Shebli Mausoleum and Tower: a Seljuq-era tomb tower. Mount Damavand: the snow-capped volcanic cone dominating the skyline, a major draw for regional trekkers and climbers.

Damavand honey is a locally known product of the area.
