Sampit

Kalimantan, Indonesia

Why visit Sampit?

Sampit is the capital of East Kotawaringin Regency in Central Kalimantan, located on the Mentaya River about 50 km inland from the Java Sea. With a population of around 170,000, it is the second-largest city in Central Kalimantan and an important centre for the palm oil, rubber, and timber industries. The city lies at the heart of a vast plantation belt.

The town gained international notoriety during the 2001 Sampit conflict between Dayak and Madurese communities. Since then, peace has been restored and the city has moved forward. For travellers, Sampit serves as a transport hub between Banjarmasin and Palangka Raya, and as a gateway to the wildlife areas of Central Kalimantan's south coast.

The climate is tropical with year-round temperatures of 25–33°C. The wet season runs November–April.
