Sangatta
Kalimantan, Indonesia
Why visit Sangatta?
Sangatta is the capital of East Kutai Regency in East Kalimantan, located about 90 km north of Samarinda. The town of around 120,000 people serves the vast coal mining operations of the Kutai Timur region — one of Indonesia's largest coal-producing areas. Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), one of the world's largest open-pit coal mines, operates just north of the town.
Despite its industrial character, Sangatta is a pleasant town with tree-lined streets. It serves as the most convenient access point for the northern section of Kutai National Park and as a stop on the road between Bontang and the interior of East Kalimantan.
The climate is tropical with year-round temperatures of 25–33°C.
