Why visit Malang?

Malang is a historic city in East Java located on a high plateau at about 500 m elevation, giving it a cool, pleasant climate. It was a popular hill station during the Dutch colonial era, leaving a legacy of beautiful Art Deco and colonial architecture. Today, Malang is a major educational center (known for its universities), a hub for agritourism (apples, coffee, and flowers), and the gateway to Mount Bromo. The city has a laid-back vibe, excellent culinary scene, and a thriving café culture.

How do you get there?

By plane

Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport (MLG) serves direct flights from Jakarta, Denpasar, Bandung, and Balikpapan.

By train

Malang's two stations are Stasiun Malang (executive and business class) and Stasiun Kota Lama (economy). Trains connect to Surabaya (1.5-2 hours), Yogyakarta (5 hours), and Jakarta (12 hours).

By bus

Arjosari Terminal is the main bus terminal, with services to Surabaya, Probolinggo, and other East Java cities.

By car

Malang is about 2 hours south of Surabaya via the toll road.

Ride-hailing apps (Gojek, Grab) are efficient and affordable. Angkot (minivans) cover city routes. Becak (cycle rickshaws) are common for short trips. Bicycle rental is a great way to explore the city center.

What are the things to do?

The colorful Jalan Ijen neighborhood with its Art Deco mansions and cafés. The Tugu Malang monument. Jatim Park 1, 2, and 3 (family theme parks with museums, a zoo, and a science center). Museum Brawijaya displaying Indonesian military history. Museum Singosari with Singosari-era artifacts. The Batu Night Spectacular (floating market). The cobblestoned area of Kampung Warna-warni (rainbow village) and Kampung Biru (blue village). Sumber Maron, a beautiful waterfall.

Explore the countryside of Batu (about 15 km north), a popular hill station with theme parks, apple orchards, and cool air. Take a bromo sunrise tour (departures around midnight). Visit the various fruit and vegetable farms in the surrounding highlands. Take a photography walk through the city's colonial-era neighborhoods. Go horseback riding at Kusuma Agrowisata. Visit the Pemandian Air Panas Cangar hot springs.

Where to eat?

Malang's food is diverse and affordable. Bakso Malang (meatball soup with fried wontons and noodles) is the city's most famous dish. Other specialties include nasi pecel (rice with peanut sauce), rawon (black beef soup), cwie mie (dry noodle dish), tahu telur (tofu and egg fritter), sate tusuk (grilled skewers), and getuk pisang (banana steamed cake). The food stalls on Jalan Semeru and Jalan Merdeka are excellent.

Where to drink?

Malang's café culture is vibrant. Kopi Malang from local highland plantations is excellent. Es teler (avocado, jackfruit, and coconut drink), es campur, and fresh juices are widely available. The cool climate makes Malang a great place for a hot cup of coffee.

Where to stay?

Malang has affordable accommodation. Budget guesthouses near Jalan Ijen and around the city center cost Rp 100,000–300,000. Mid-range hotels (Hotel Tugu, Swiss-Belinn, Harris) cost Rp 300,000–700,000. Luxury hotels (Shalimar Boutique Hotel, Atria Hotel) cost USD 60–150. In Batu, there are many resort-style options.

What should you buy?

Malang is famous for its apples and apple-based products (cider, vinegar, dried apples). Batik Malangan has a distinctive local style. Keripik tempe (tempeh chips) and keripik buah (fruit chips) are popular snacks. Pasar Besar (market) sells local produce, crafts, and snacks. Malang Night Market (Alun-Alun Tugu area) is good for souvenirs.

Where to go next?

Mount Bromo and the Tengger Caldera are the primary reason many visit Malang — book a tour from the city. Tumpak Sewu Waterfall (the most spectacular in Java) is about 2 hours south. The Baluran National Park (Little Africa of Java) is 4 hours east. Surabaya is 1.5-2 hours north by train or car. Continue east to Banyuwangi for the Bali ferry.
