Pekalongan

Pekalongan is a coastal city in Central Java famous as a major center for Indonesia's batik industry. Known as "Kota Batik" (Batik City), Pekalongan produces distinctive batik with strong Chinese and Javanese influences, often featuring bright colors and bird motifs. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Craft City in 2014.

By train

Pekalongan Station serves trains from Jakarta (5 hours), Semarang (2 hours), and Surabaya.

By bus

Buses connect Pekalongan to Semarang, Tegal, and other Central Java cities.

By car

Pekalongan is on the Trans-Java Toll Road, about 1.5 hours west of Semarang.

Nasi gandul (beef stew with rice), sate blengong (a Pekalongan specialty — duck and chicken satay), and megono (jackfruit-grated coconut mix with rice) are local dishes.

Budget to mid-range hotels (Rp 150,000–400,000).

Batik Pekalongan is the best buy — prices are lower here than in Jakarta or Yogyakarta. The Pesindon area has dozens of batik shops and workshops.

Semarang is 1.5 hours east. Tegal is 1 hour west. The Dieng Plateau is about 3 hours south.
