About Jampui Hills

Jampui Hills is a range of low mountains in the North Tripura district, running along the state's eastern edge near the border with Mizoram. Often called the "eternal hill of spring", it is the highest hill range in Tripura, with Betlingchhip (Thaidawr) — generally cited as around 3,000 ft / roughly 930–975 m — as its highest point. The range is famous above all for its oranges: the slopes are terraced with orange orchards, and the annual Orange and Tourism Festival, held around November, is the region's signature event. The hills are home largely to Mizo (Lushai) communities, and villages such as Vanghmun, Sabual, Phuldungsei and Hmunpui give the area a distinct hill culture, with churches, neat homesteads and a cool, friendly atmosphere quite different from the Tripura plains.

For travellers, Jampui is Tripura's premier hill retreat: clean air, sweeping views over folded ridges and, on clear days, glimpses towards the plains and the Mizoram hills. It is a place for slow days — walking among orchards, watching sunrise and sunset from viewpoints, and enjoying the unhurried village rhythm. The pleasant weather year-round (it rarely gets oppressively hot) is part of its charm.

The climate is mild and temperate for the region. The best time to visit is the cool, clear stretch from October to April; the orange harvest and festival around November is the peak draw. The June–September monsoon brings mist, rain and slippery roads, though the hills are lush and green. Carry a light jacket — evenings are cool even outside winter.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, Agartala (IATA: IXA), roughly 200 km south, with flights to Kolkata, Guwahati and other Indian cities. From the airport, hire a taxi or take a shared sumo/jeep towards Kanchanpur and onward up the hills; a private car for the long, winding journey is the most comfortable option, typically costing in the region of ₹4,500–7,000 depending on bargaining and the day.

By Train

The nearest useful railhead is at Kumarghat / Dharmanagar in northern Tripura, both on the Lumding–Agartala line with connections towards Guwahati and beyond. From Dharmanagar or Kumarghat, continue by road via Kanchanpur up into the hills. Book trains well in advance, as seats on northeast routes fill quickly.

By Car / Road

Jampui is reached by a winding hill road via Kanchanpur, the gateway town at the foot of the range. From Agartala it is a long drive of roughly 5–7 hours (about 200 km); from Dharmanagar / Kumarghat it is around 2–3 hours up to the main villages. The hill road is narrow and twisting but generally motorable, slower and slippery in the monsoon. Shared sumos/jeeps and buses run from Dharmanagar and Kanchanpur up to Vanghmun and other villages.

Within the hills, shared sumos/jeeps are the main link between villages such as Vanghmun, Sabual and Phuldungsei, running on local schedules; hiring a private vehicle gives the freedom to reach viewpoints and orchards at your own pace. Many places are pleasantly walkable — strolling between orchards and viewpoints is part of the experience. There are no metered autorickshaws or ride-hailing apps; agree fares in advance for any hired transport, and start early as services thin out by late afternoon.

Things to do

  • Betlingchhip (Thaidawr) peak — the highest point of the range and of Tripura, offering panoramic views over the hills and, on clear days, towards the plains and Mizoram. A short climb/walk from the road; daylight visits.

  • Vanghmun — the principal village and the usual base, with churches, orange orchards and a relaxed hill atmosphere.

  • Sunrise and sunset viewpoints — several spots along the ridge are renowned for cloud-filled valleys at dawn.

  • Orange orchards — the terraced groves that define the hills, especially photogenic and fragrant in the harvest season.

  • Eden Tourist Lodge area — a well-known vantage point near a popular place to stay.

  • Walk and trek through the orchards and along the ridges between villages.

  • Watch sunrise and sunset from the ridge viewpoints — the signature Jampui experience.

  • Visit during the Orange and Tourism Festival (around November) for orchard visits, cultural performances and the chance to buy oranges at the source.

  • Experience Mizo village life — visit churches, meet local communities and enjoy the hill hospitality.

  • Photography and birdwatching across the green, mist-laced landscape.

Food & Dining

Food in Jampui reflects its Mizo character — simple, home-style meals of rice with boiled vegetables, pork or chicken, often lightly spiced, alongside the Bengali-Tripuri dishes found elsewhere in the state. Meals are mostly taken at tourist lodges and small village eateries; menus are limited, so meals may need to be ordered in advance at guesthouses. Vegetarians can be accommodated but should ask ahead, as choices are fewer. Standards are homely and prices modest. Fresh oranges are, of course, everywhere in season.

Cafes & Nightlife

Tea is the everyday hot drink; sealed bottled water is recommended, though hill spring water is generally cleaner than plains tap water — still, treat or boil if unsure. Fresh orange juice in season is a local treat. Jampui is a quiet hill area with little in the way of bars; alcohol availability is limited and best not relied upon.

Places to Stay

Accommodation is concentrated in Vanghmun and a few other villages; book ahead, especially around the November festival.

  • Budget: Simple village guesthouses and homestays in Vanghmun and nearby villages offer basic rooms, often in the rough range of ₹600–1,200 per night, and are a good way to experience Mizo hospitality.

  • Mid-range: The Eden Tourist Lodge (Tripura Tourism) at Vanghmun is the best-known place to stay, with comfortable rooms and fine views, typically in roughly the ₹1,200–2,500 range.

  • Upscale / heritage: For higher-tier comfort, travellers generally fall back on hotels in Agartala such as Ginger Agartala, typically ₹4,000 and up.

What to buy

The thing to buy in Jampui is its famous oranges, sold fresh in season directly from orchards and roadside stalls — sweet, juicy and a worthwhile souvenir to carry down. Local Mizo handwoven textiles and shawls can sometimes be found in the villages. For the wider range of Tripura cane and bamboo handicrafts, shop in Agartala. Prices for oranges and produce are generally fixed or lightly negotiable; bargaining is low-key here.
