About Nalgonda

Nalgonda is a city in western Telangana, the headquarters of Nalgonda district, about 100 km southeast of Hyderabad on the road toward Guntur and Vijayawada. The surrounding district is rich in history — from ancient Buddhist remains at Nagarjunakonda to the medieval Jain temples of Kolanupaka — and is best known to travellers as the gateway to the colossal Nagarjuna Sagar Dam on the Krishna River. The region also includes the noted pilgrimage hill of Yadagirigutta and the textile town of Pochampally.

Nalgonda sits on the dry Deccan plateau and shares Telangana's hot climate, with very warm summers and a more comfortable November-to-February window. The town itself is a workaday district centre, but it is well placed for visiting some of the most significant historical and engineering sites in the state.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (IATA: HYD), about 130 km away.

By Train

Nalgonda lies on the railway line between Hyderabad and Guntur, with regular train services in both directions.

By Car / Road

Nalgonda is about 101 km southeast of Hyderabad and is very well connected by bus from Hyderabad, Guntur and the Khammam districts, and from major towns nearby. Frequent TSRTC services make road the easiest way in.

Local travel is mainly by autorickshaw and town buses, with app-based autos available in town. The major attractions — Nagarjuna Sagar, Yadagirigutta, Kolanupaka and Pochampally — are spread across the district at distances of tens of kilometres, so a hired car or buses are needed to reach them. Agree autorickshaw fares in advance.

Things to do

  • Nagarjuna Sagar Dam — one of the world's largest masonry dams, completed in 1966 on the Krishna River, 124 m high and about 1 km long with 26 crest gates; it created one of the world's largest man-made lakes and is an early Indian hydroelectric and irrigation project. (Detailed separately as a destination.)
  • Nagarjunakonda — a museum island in the reservoir with relics of a 3rd-century Buddhist civilisation, including the great Mahachaitya stupa said to enshrine relics of the Buddha.
  • Yadagirigutta (Yadadri) — a major hilltop Lakshmi Narasimha temple, recently rebuilt on a grand scale, about 60 km away.
  • Kolanupaka (Kulpakji) — an ancient Jain temple complex with revered idols, near Aler.
  • Pochampally — the ikat-weaving town, a recognised craft tourism village, famous for its tie-and-dye silk and cotton sarees.

Make the day trip to Nagarjuna Sagar to see the dam and ferry across to Nagarjunakonda island for its Buddhist museum and excavated stupas. Visit the hill shrine of Yadagirigutta and the Jain temples at Kolanupaka. Tour the weavers' workshops at Pochampally to watch ikat sarees being made, and combine it with the trade town of Miryalaguda, with its many rice mills and the Janapahad dargah nearby.

Food & Dining

Nalgonda's food is everyday Telangana and Andhra cuisine — spicy curries and rice, with a strong South Indian tiffin culture for breakfast. In summer, look out for munjalu (ice-apple / palmyra fruit) sold locally, and the fresh mangoes the area produces. The town has modest restaurants and roadside dhabas; both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are easy to find.

Cafes & Nightlife

Filter coffee and chai are the everyday drinks at tiffin centres and roadside stalls. Fresh lime soda, buttermilk, tender coconut and sugarcane juice are widely available. Licensed bars operate in hotels and there are government wine shops. Drink bottled or filtered water.
