About Adilabad

Adilabad is a city in the far north of Telangana, the headquarters of Adilabad district, surrounded by a varied landscape of green forests, rivers and waterfalls. The area was once part of Maharashtra; borders shifted from 1945 onward to make it part of Andhra Pradesh and, since 2014, Telangana. The district is separated from its neighbours by the Godavari River and is rich in minerals — it ranks first among Telangana's districts in mineral revenue, with reserves of coal, iron ore, limestone and clay. Heavy cotton trading has earned Adilabad the nickname "City of Cotton."

The district is also home to tribal communities such as the Gond and Lambada, whose languages have no written script; the Gond kings built the fort at Utnoor, 55 km away, now the headquarters of the Integrated Tribal Development Authority. Adilabad's climate is hot and dry in summer with a green, wet monsoon; the cooler months from November to February are the best time to visit. Most of the finest sights lie in the surrounding villages, making the town a good base.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest convenient airport is at Nagpur (IATA: NAG) in Maharashtra, to the north; Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (IATA: HYD) is the larger gateway well to the south.

By Train

Adilabad railway station is served by the overnight Krishna Express (17405), which connects many regional cities and terminates at Tirupati, arriving daily around 6:15 AM and departing around 8:45 PM. The city is also a stop on the Nandigram Express (11402) between Nagpur and Mumbai, calling at Adilabad daily around 1 PM.

By Car / Road

Adilabad has a well-served bus station with frequent services to and from Hyderabad, Nagpur, Nizamabad and many other towns, making road travel a reliable option.

Local travel is mainly by autorickshaw and town buses. Because the best sights are scattered across surrounding villages — many small, with little accommodation — they are usually visited as day trips from Adilabad by hired taxi or by bus plus rickshaw. For example, reaching Kuntala Waterfalls means a bus to Neredikonda and a taxi or rickshaw from there. Agree fares in advance.

Things to do

  • Kuntala Waterfalls — the highest waterfall in Telangana, about 30 km from town on the Kadam River; a hugely popular day trip even from Hyderabad, with a legend linking it to Shakuntala and King Dushyanta.
  • Pochera and Sadarmat (Saddamatti) Waterfalls — more scenic falls in the wider district.
  • Jainath Temple — about 21 km out, a Jain-style temple complex with stone inscriptions in Prakrit, including ten ślokas (verses).
  • Kawal Tiger Reserve — the major forest and wildlife reserve in the district (covered separately).
  • Basar (Gnana Saraswati Temple) — on the banks of the Godavari, one of the few major Saraswati temples in South India; a key pilgrimage centre along with Utnoor and the Keslapur temple.

Chase waterfalls — Kuntala, Pochera and Sadarmat are all within day-trip range and at their fullest just after the monsoon. Trek to the Mitte Waterfalls, about 45 km from Utnoor. Explore the Gond and Lambada tribal heartland around Utnoor and Keslapur, drive the scenic ghat roads and cotton fields near Kerameri, and visit the forests of the Kawal Tiger Reserve for wildlife.

Food & Dining

Adilabad's food is everyday Telangana and Maharashtra-influenced cuisine — spicy curries, rice and jonna (sorghum) rotis — with a strong tiffin culture for breakfast. The town has modest restaurants, biryani houses and roadside dhabas; both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are easy to find. The proximity to Maharashtra adds some northern touches to local cooking.

Cafes & Nightlife

Filter coffee and chai are the everyday drinks at tiffin centres and roadside stalls. Fresh lime soda, buttermilk and sugarcane juice are widely available. Licensed bars operate in hotels and there are government wine shops. Drink bottled or filtered water.

What to buy

If you are not going on to Nirmal — the larger regional centre for the craft — Adilabad is a good place to pick up Dhokra (Dhokra/Ghadwa) metalwork, a roughly 4,000-year-old lost-wax non-ferrous casting tradition that typically produces small animal figures and decorative pieces made by local tribal artisans. The district is also known for fine long-staple cotton grown by tribal farmers near Kerameri.
