Hoshiarpur

Why visit Hoshiarpur?

Hoshiarpur lies in the Doaba region of Punjab, in the gently rising, partly forested upland where the plains meet the Shivalik foothills. At around 300 m elevation it is a touch cooler and greener than the sultry river plains to the west, with seasonal streams (chos) cutting through the terrain. The town is old and historically prosperous, long known for its woodcraft and ivory-inlay artisanship and, in the wider district, for a large diaspora that has carried Hoshiarpur's name abroad. It is also a noted centre of Sanskrit and Indological scholarship.

For travellers, Hoshiarpur is a relaxed, workaday Punjabi town rather than a major tourist stop, but its museum, nearby wildlife sanctuary, temples and cooler upland setting make it a pleasant pause in the Doaba. It also serves as a base for hill shrines and the surrounding foothill countryside.

Thanks to its altitude, Hoshiarpur's summers (April–June) are a little milder than the central plains, the monsoon (July–September) keeps the uplands green, and winters are cool and pleasant — the most comfortable time to visit.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at Amritsar (ATQ); a cab from there takes around 2.5 hours. For wider international connections, fly into Delhi (DEL) and continue overland by train or road.

By Train

Hoshiarpur railway station connects the town to the Punjab rail network, though it is a quieter station with limited facilities. Trains run to Jalandhar and onward to the main Delhi–Amritsar line. For longer journeys, Jalandhar Junction (about 40 km) offers far more frequent and varied services.

By Car / Road

Road is the most convenient way to reach Hoshiarpur, which is well connected by bus to Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Nawanshahr and into Himachal Pradesh. The town sits on highways linking the Doaba plains with the foothills, and regular state and private buses serve the bus stand in the town centre.

Auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws handle most local trips around the compact town; agree the fare first. Shared autos run along the main roads to outlying areas, and the central bazaars and Clock Tower area are easily walked. Taxis can be hired for trips to the museum, sanctuary and hill shrines.

What are the things to do?

  • Archaeological Museum, within the Vishveshvaranand Vishwa Bandhu Institute of Sanskrit and Indological Studies — a free museum (open Tuesday–Sunday, roughly 10am–5pm) displaying medieval-period sculptures alongside fossils and stone tools from the ancient site of Dhol Baha, about 30 km away.

  • Takhni-Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary — a Shivalik-foothills reserve where you may spot nilgai, wild boar, peacock, deer and, occasionally, leopard.

  • Baba Balak Nath Temple — a popular local Hindu shrine.

  • Shimla Pahari — an elevated viewpoint and locality in the town.

  • Sanskrit College and the institute precinct reflect Hoshiarpur's scholarly heritage.

  • Catch a film at the historic Swaran Theatre (Swaran Cineplex) on Roshan Road, opposite the bus stand — one of the oldest cinemas in town — or at the modern Miraj Cinemas in J's Eminent Mall on Mall Road.

  • Take a half-day to the Takhni-Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary for birdwatching and forest walks in the foothills.

  • Use Hoshiarpur as a base for visiting nearby hill shrines and the Shivalik foothills, and the ancient site of Dhol Baha.
