Why visit Mohali?

Mohali, officially Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (SAS Nagar), is a planned satellite city adjoining Chandigarh and one of Punjab's most modern urban districts. Named after Sahibzada Ajit Singh, the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh, it grew from the 1970s as an industrial and residential extension of Chandigarh and is laid out in the same grid of numbered "phases" and sectors. Today Mohali is Punjab's IT and industrial showcase, with software parks, pharmaceutical and electronics units, a cricket stadium of international standing, and an expanding airport — effectively forming a single tri-city conurbation with Chandigarh and Panchkula.

For visitors, Mohali offers comfortable modern infrastructure, good dining, the famous cricket ground, and historic Sikh shrines including the towering Fateh Burj victory tower. It is most useful as a well-connected, contemporary base from which to explore the wider tri-city area.

The climate matches the plains: hot summers (April–June), a monsoon (July–September), and cool, pleasant winters from November to February, which is the best time to visit.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) physically lies within Mohali (its civil terminal is on the Mohali side) and serves domestic destinations across India plus limited international flights to the Gulf. From the terminal, taxis and app cabs reach most of Mohali within 15–30 minutes.

By Train

Mohali Railway Station (Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar) is in Phase 9, on the Chandigarh–Morinda line, with local and some express services. For wider long-distance connections, Chandigarh Junction, a short drive away, is the main railhead, with frequent trains to Delhi (including Shatabdi services) and beyond.

By Car / Road

Mohali is seamlessly connected by road to Chandigarh and Panchkula and sits on highways towards Ludhiana, Rupnagar and Himachal Pradesh. The Mohali Bus Stand, the main terminal, is in Sector 8 (Phase 3), with state and private buses to Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Delhi and hill destinations. The tri-city is well served by ride-hailing apps for door-to-door travel.

Auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs (Ola, Uber) are the easiest way around Mohali, which is too spread out to cover entirely on foot. Local and CTU buses link the phases with Chandigarh. The numbered-phase layout makes navigation straightforward once you understand the grid. Within a phase or market, walking is comfortable.

What are the things to do?

  • Fateh Burj (the Victory Tower) at Chappar Chiri — at around 100 m (328 ft) it is the tallest victory tower in India, commemorating Banda Singh Bahadur's 1710 victory over the Mughal forces; the memorial grounds make a striking visit.

  • Gurudwara Amb Sahib, Phase 8 — a historic shrine marking a visit by Guru Har Rai, the seventh Sikh Guru.

  • Gurudwara Angeetha Sahib (Angitha Sahib), Phase 8 — a notable local Sikh shrine.

  • Rose Garden and the Musical Fountain Floral Garden — landscaped gardens within the Floral Sculpture Garden, pleasant for an evening walk.

  • Shiv Mandir and Gurudwara Guru Singh Sabha, Phase 1 — community temples and shrines in the older phases.

  • Cricket at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium, Sector 16 (Sukhna Path) — built in 1993 with a capacity around 45,000, this internationally renowned ground has hosted Test, ODI and IPL matches (long the home of Punjab Kings); catching a match here is a highlight when fixtures are on.

  • Spend an evening in the lively Phase 7, Phase 3B2 and Phase 5 markets, which combine shopping, cafés and nightlife.

  • Use Mohali as a base for day trips around the tri-city — Chandigarh's Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake, and Panchkula's gardens — all within easy reach.

Mohali has a strong, contemporary dining scene spread across its market phases, from dhabas to multi-cuisine restaurants:

  • Hot Millions, Phase 3B2 — a long-running, popular family restaurant and fast-food chain.
  • Shere Punjab, Phase 5 — well known for hearty Punjabi food.
  • Papa Ji Da Dhaba, Phase 7 — a favourite for authentic dhaba-style cooking.

Where to drink?

The market phases — especially Phase 7 and Phase 5 — host cafés, lounges and bars catering to Mohali's young, professional crowd, making it one of the livelier nightlife areas of the tri-city. Lassi, chai and fresh juices are available at every market. Tap water is best avoided; drink bottled or filtered water.
