Why visit Fatehgarh Sahib?

Fatehgarh Sahib is one of the most emotionally significant places in Sikh history, a pilgrimage town in central Punjab near the historic city of Sirhind. It commemorates the martyrdom in December 1704 of the two younger sons (Sahibzadas) of Guru Gobind Singh — Zorawar Singh, aged about seven, and Fateh Singh, aged about five — who, with their grandmother Mata Gujri, were captured and bricked alive in a wall on the orders of the Mughal governor of Sirhind for refusing to renounce their faith. The town's name, "the place of Fateh's fort/victory," and its great gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib honour their sacrifice. The site later became symbolic of the Sikh victory over Sirhind under Banda Singh Bahadur.

For travellers, Fatehgarh Sahib is principally a place of pilgrimage and reflection, its calendar dominated by the Shaheedi Jor Mela each December, one of the largest gatherings in Punjab. The adjoining old town of Sirhind also preserves notable Mughal-era monuments. The town is the headquarters of its district and lies on the Grand Trunk Road between Patiala and Ludhiana.

The climate is typical of the plains: hot summers (April–June), a monsoon (July–September), and cool, pleasant winters. October to March is the most comfortable time to visit, and the December mela is the most charged time to be here.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Chandigarh International Airport (IXC), about 50 km away, with domestic flights and limited international service. From Chandigarh, continue by taxi or bus (around 1–1.5 hours). Delhi (DEL) is the main long-haul gateway.

By Train

Sirhind Junction, immediately adjacent to Fatehgarh Sahib, lies on the main Delhi–Ludhiana–Amritsar trunk line and is well served by frequent trains, making rail one of the easiest ways to arrive. From Sirhind station, autos and taxis cover the short distance to the gurdwara. Reserve seats in advance for long-distance services.

By Car / Road

Fatehgarh Sahib is well connected by road, sitting on the Grand Trunk Road (National Highway 44) between Ludhiana and Ambala, about 25 km from Patiala. Regular Punjab Roadways and private buses serve the town, and special services run during the December mela. The bus stand is close to the main gurdwara.

The gurdwara complex and the nearby Sirhind monuments are the main points of interest, with auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws covering the short distances between them; agree the fare first. The gurdwara precinct is best explored on foot. Taxis can be hired for visits to the surrounding Sirhind sites.

What are the things to do?

  • Gurudwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib — the grand central gurdwara marking the site of the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh's younger sons; its white domes and large complex are the focus of pilgrimage.

  • Gurudwara Mata Gujri / Bhora Sahib — within the complex, marking where Mata Gujri and the young Sahibzadas were held; deeply revered.

  • Rauza Sharif (tomb of Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi) — an important Sufi shrine in nearby Sirhind, a major site of Islamic pilgrimage.

  • Aam Khas Bagh — a Mughal-era garden and royal halting-place on the Grand Trunk Road at Sirhind, with surviving pavilions and waterworks.

  • Other Sirhind monuments — tombs, mosques and serais surviving from the town's importance as a Mughal provincial centre.

  • Attend the Shaheedi Jor Mela (around 25–28 December each year), commemorating the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas — one of Punjab's largest and most moving gatherings.

  • Take darshan and join the langar (communal free meal) at Gurudwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib.

  • Tour the Mughal-era monuments of Sirhind, including Aam Khas Bagh and Rauza Sharif, for a sense of the area's layered history.

Where to eat?

Food in Fatehgarh Sahib centres on simple, satisfying Punjabi vegetarian fare, and the langar served free at Gurudwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib is both a spiritual institution and a wholesome meal open to all. Around the bazaar and along the GT Road, dhabas and sweet shops serve chole bhature, parathas, lassi and jalebi, and the highway dhabas of the Sirhind area are well regarded. Vegetarian food is plentiful.

Where to drink?

The everyday drinks are lassi, chai and seasonal sweet-shop beverages such as milk badam and sharbat. In keeping with the town's status as a Sikh holy place, alcohol and tobacco are inappropriate within and around the gurdwara precincts. Drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water.
