Kiltan
Lakshadweep, India
About Kiltan
Kiltan is a small coral island in the Amindivi group of northern Lakshadweep, lying in the Arabian Sea. Long and narrow like its Amindivi neighbours, it is a low ribbon of palm-covered coral with a lagoon on its leeward side. Historically Kiltan was a port of call on the old Arabian Sea trade routes, and it remains a quiet, traditional island whose economy rests on fishing, coconut cultivation and the production of coir (coconut-fibre rope), one of its best-known products.
The population is mostly Muslim and Malayalam-speaking, with village life centred on its mosques and the coconut groves that cover the island. Kiltan sees few visitors and has very limited tourist infrastructure; it is open to Indian travellers, while foreigners are restricted to Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat.
The climate is tropical, calmest and driest from December to May (the best time to visit). The southwest monsoon (May–September) brings rough seas that disrupt boat transfers, so allow buffer days.

A Lakshadweep entry permit is required, arranged through SPORTS or an authorised operator for Indian visitors. Foreigners are generally not permitted on Kiltan.
By Plane
The nearest airport is Agatti Airport (AGX), with flights from Kochi, Bengaluru and Goa. From Agatti, Kiltan is reached by ship/boat transfer within the package; SPORTS cruise itineraries may call here.
By Train
By Car / Road
Kiltan is small and best explored on foot or by hired bicycle. There is no public transport or ride-hailing. The lagoon and nearby waters are crossed by small local boats arranged through SPORTS or the tourist facility.
Things to do
- Coir-making workshops — Kiltan's traditional coir (coconut-fibre rope) production, the craft most associated with the island.
- Local mosques — the island's mosques, central to its village life and Muslim community.
- The lagoon and beach — quiet coral-sand shore and reef, good for snorkelling and swimming where the lagoon allows.
The main pursuits are gentle and nature- or culture-focused: see coir making, walk and cycle the coconut groves and village lanes, and snorkel or swim in the lagoon (arranged through SPORTS). Glass-bottom boat rides show the coral to non-swimmers. There is no nightlife.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
Food is Malabar-Kerala island fare based on coconut, curry leaves and fresh tuna and reef fish. Meals are generally arranged within the package or aboard the SPORTS cruise. Regional Lakshadweep specialities include Mus Kavaab (spicy tuna curry) and crispy fried octopus. During Ramadan most eateries close until dusk.
Cafes & Nightlife
Coconut water is the everyday drink. Fresh water is limited, drawn from bore wells, harvested rainwater and desalination, so drink treated or bottled water. Alcohol is prohibited on Kiltan (as everywhere in Lakshadweep except Bangaram).

Ask on WhatsAppPlaces to Stay
- Budget / Mid-range: Basic government tourist huts/cottages managed by SPORTS, where available, are the only accommodation, open to Indian citizens only and usually included in package tours; standards are simple. Many visitors stay aboard the SPORTS cruise ship and visit Kiltan by day.
- Upscale / heritage: > TODO: There are no upscale or heritage hotels on Kiltan; full-service resorts in Lakshadweep are limited to Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat.
What to buy
Kiltan's signature product is coir (coconut-fibre rope and items); coir and other coconut and shell handicrafts are the typical souvenirs (collecting live coral is illegal). Retail is informal with largely fixed prices.
