About Sabarimala
Sabarimala is a forested mountain in the Western Ghats of Kerala, famous as the site of the Ayyappa temple — one of the most visited pilgrimage centres in the world, drawing tens of millions of devotees each season. The shrine sits deep inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve, and reaching it traditionally means leaving all vehicles behind and walking the final stretch through dense evergreen forest. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappan (also called Dharmashastha), revered here as a naishtika brahmachari, a lifelong celibate.
This is a place of strict observance rather than tourism. Pilgrims customarily adopt an ascetic discipline for 41 days before the climb — abstaining from alcohol, smoking, non-vegetarian food, sex, shaving and luxuries — and travel barefoot. They wear blue, black or saffron, and carry the Irumudi Kettu, a two-pouched cloth bundle holding a ghee-filled coconut, puja materials, rice and a banana, borne on the head. The chant "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" fills the trail, and devotees address one another as "Ayyappa" rather than by name. Note that, by long-standing custom and despite a 2018 Supreme Court ruling, the entry of women of menstruating age remains highly contested and sensitive.
The temple is open during distinct windows rather than year-round. The main season is the Mandala pilgrimage — about 41 days from roughly 16/17 November, culminating in the Makaravilakku/Makara Sankranti festivities in mid-January. Outside this, the shrine opens for the first few days of each Malayalam month, which is generally a calmer time to visit. The hills are cool and forested; the Mandala season coincides with the pleasant post-monsoon months but also with the heaviest crowds.

By Plane
The nearest airports are Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (TRV), about 170 km away, and Cochin International Airport (COK) at Nedumbassery, about 160 km away. Both connect to major Indian cities and several international destinations. From either airport, travel onward by taxi or bus toward Pathanamthitta and Pamba.
By Train
By Car / Road
The main approach is the Pathanamthitta–Pamba road, passing through Mannarakulanji, Vadasserikara, Perunad, Laha and Nilackal before reaching Pamba (about 70 km). During the Mandala season, KSRTC runs heavily augmented services to Pamba from major Kerala towns and neighbouring states. Direct buses also operate from Ernakulam and Kumili. Private vehicles are parked at the Nilackal base station, from where shuttle services carry pilgrims onward to Pamba.
There is no conventional local transport at the shrine — the final approach is on foot. From Pamba, pilgrims trek roughly 4.5 km along a forest path that climbs to the Sannidhanam (the "Sacred Abode") on the hilltop. The famous Pathinettam Padi — eighteen golden steps — leads to the shrine itself, each step regarded as sacred. At ground level are two subsidiary shrines, one to Lord Ganesha and one to the Goddess, and a large fire pit beside the steps where pilgrims burn coconuts as a symbolic offering. For elderly or differently-abled pilgrims, doli (palanquin) services are available for the climb. Vehicles must be left at the Nilackal parking station.
Things to do
Sannidhanam (Ayyappa Temple) — the hilltop shrine itself, set on a raised platform and approached by the eighteen golden steps; the spiritual focus of the entire pilgrimage.
Pathinettam Padi (Eighteen Holy Steps) — the sacred stairway leading to the shrine.
Ground-floor shrines — temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha and to the Goddess at the base of the steps.
Surrounding forest temples — functional shrines survive at Nilackal, Kalaketi and Karimala, with remnants of older temples scattered across the neighbouring hills.
Periyar Tiger Reserve — Sabarimala lies within this evergreen, mountainous forest, so the natural setting itself — dense jungle, ridgelines and abundant birdlife — is part of the experience.
The pilgrim trek — the central activity is the climb itself, from Pamba up through the forest to the Sannidhanam.
Forest trekking routes — a longer trekking approach runs from Plapalli to Aangaamuzhi, then Muzhiyaar and on toward the Sabarigiri road.
Witnessing the pujas — the four daily pujas (Usha Puja in the morning, Ucha Puja at midday, the Abhishekam, and the Padi Puja conducted on the eighteen steps at the night closing) and the great Makaravilakku festivities are the heart of a visit during the season.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
Food at Sabarimala is simple, vegetarian and rooted in the ascetic spirit of the pilgrimage. Free meals are distributed to devotees throughout the season by various organisations and government agencies. Government agencies also sell prepared food at fixed, modest prices. Note that pilgrims under observance avoid non-vegetarian food and foods made from plant roots.
- Kerala-style lunch — brown rice with sambar, rasam, moru, thoran, aviyal and achar; around ₹48.
- Andhra-style meals — white rice with spiced achar, pachadis, podis and appadam; around ₹50.
- Vegetable biryani — rice cooked with vegetables, spices and ghee; around ₹45.
- Masala dosa — a fermented rice-and-lentil crepe with a potato-onion filling; around ₹35.
- Aravana Appam — small dark dumplings available only at Sabarimala; around ₹25 a packet.
- Aravana Payasam — the temple's jaggery, rice and ghee dessert; around ₹80 a tin.
Cafes & Nightlife
Alcohol is strictly prohibited at Sabarimala, in keeping with the discipline observed by pilgrims. Simple non-alcoholic drinks are sold by government agencies, including Milma jersey milk (around ₹22), Milma sambharam (spiced buttermilk, around ₹15), and porridge served with lentils and achar (around ₹27). Carry sealed bottled water or use boiled and filtered water; untreated water on the trail is not reliably safe.

Ask on WhatsAppPlaces to Stay
Accommodation here is built for ascetic pilgrims, not comfort-seeking tourists — expect basic facilities, and be prepared to sleep without a mattress. Booking is handled through the temple administration, and availability is extremely tight during the Mandala season.
- Budget — the Forest Dormitory (☏ +91 4735-202074) offers very plain dormitory beds, around ₹80.
- Mid-range — the Palazhi Guest House (☏ +91 4735-202049) has simple rooms, around ₹350; the Thriveni Hotel at Pamba is another option for pilgrims using the Pamba base.
- Upscale — facilities are limited; the Shiva Shakthi Guest House (☏ +91 4735-202049, around ₹975) and the Poorna / Pushkala Hall (☏ +91 4735-202049, around ₹1,275) are among the higher-tier options, though still modest by hotel standards.
What to buy
Shopping is not a feature of Sabarimala — this is a pilgrimage site, not a market. The notable items are the temple's sacred offerings, especially Aravana (a thick jaggery-and-ghee dessert) and Appam (sweet dumplings), bought by most devotees to carry home as prasadam. Pilgrim necessities — the Irumudi Kettu bundle, puja materials, blue/black/saffron clothing — are typically assembled before setting out rather than purchased on the mountain.
