About Ramgarh

Ramgarh — properly Ramgarh Cantonment — is a town in central Jharkhand on the Ranchi–Hazaribagh corridor, set on the Chota Nagpur Plateau amid coalfields and forested hills. It has a long military association as a cantonment town (it hosted a large army camp from the colonial era, and a famous 1940 Congress session was held nearby), and today it is a busy district headquarters and mining centre. For travellers it is most useful as a base for some of the region's best-loved short trips: the Chhinnamasta temple at Rajrappa, the dramatic hairpins of the Patratu Valley, and the Patratu dam and lake.

The town itself is workaday rather than scenic, but the country around it — the Damodar river, the wooded ghats and the reservoir — is genuinely attractive, and the road down the Patratu Valley to the dam is one of the most photographed drives in Jharkhand.

The comfortable season is October to March; summers are hot and the monsoon (June–September) fills the rivers and the Rajrappa falls. Hindi is the main language. Ramgarh sits roughly midway between Ranchi (about 40 km south) and Hazaribagh (about 40 km north).

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport (IXR), about 40–50 km away, connected to major Indian cities by daily flights. Taxis and buses run from Ranchi to Ramgarh in about an hour to ninety minutes.

By Train

Ramgarh is served by stations on the Barkakana–Ranchi/Hazaribagh lines; Barkakana Junction, a short distance away, is a significant junction with wider connections.

By Car / Road

Ramgarh lies on the main Ranchi–Hazaribagh–Patna road, about 40 km from each of Ranchi and Hazaribagh, and is connected by good highway. Frequent buses and shared taxis run the Ranchi–Hazaribagh route through Ramgarh, and hired cars are convenient for Rajrappa, Patratu and the dam.

Auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws and shared autos handle local trips, and hired taxis are the practical choice for the outlying sights such as Rajrappa and Patratu, which lie several kilometres out. Agree fares before boarding; the town centre is walkable.

Things to do

  • Rajrappa (Chhinnamasta Temple) — about 30 km away, a powerful Shakti temple at the confluence where the Bhairavi (Bhera) river drops into the Damodar; one of the most visited pilgrimage spots in Jharkhand, busy with worshippers and set beside a small waterfall.

  • Patratu Valley — a scenic ghat road of tight hairpin bends descending from the plateau, with viewpoints over forested hills; a favourite drive and photo stop.

  • Patratu Dam and Lake — a reservoir at the foot of the valley with boating and lakeside recreation, increasingly developed for day-trippers.

  • Tuti Jharna — a small spring-fed waterfall in the area, locally popular.

  • Drive the Patratu Valley — the winding descent to the dam is the area's signature outing, best in clear post-monsoon weather.

  • Boating at Patratu Lake — paddle and motor boats operate on the reservoir.

  • Pilgrimage to Rajrappa — combine the Chhinnamasta temple with a look at the river confluence and falls.

  • Picnic by the Damodar — the riverbanks around Rajrappa are a popular picnic spot, especially after the rains.
