About Budgam
Budgam is a town and district headquarters in the central Kashmir Valley, lying just south-west of Srinagar on the valley floor. The town itself is a modest administrative and market centre, but Budgam district is notable for two things travellers care about: it wraps around the western edge of Srinagar (the airport at Humhama lies within the district) and it holds some of the valley's quieter natural escapes, including the meadows of Doodhpathri and Yusmarg and the major Sufi shrine of Charar-i-Sharief.
For visitors, Budgam town is more of a gateway and transit point than a sight in itself; the district's appeal lies in its rural fringe and its spiritual and scenic sites. It is a heavily agricultural area of paddy and orchard, with a strong tradition of Kashmiri handicrafts in surrounding villages. Its proximity to Srinagar makes everything in the district an easy day trip from the city.
The climate is temperate like the rest of the valley: pleasant summers (April–September) are the best time to visit, autumn brings golden chinars and harvest, and winters are cold with snow that turns Doodhpathri and Yusmarg into snowfields. Spring blossom and the saffron-belt edges add seasonal colour.

By Plane
Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar (IATA: SXR), at Humhama, lies within Budgam district, only about 10–15 km from Budgam town. A taxi from the airport to the town takes 20–30 minutes.
By Train
Budgam is a junction on the Banihal–Baramulla Kashmir Railway line, with DMU services to Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag and Banihal. It is one of the better-connected valley towns by rail. Book valley shuttles via IRCTC.
By Car / Road
Budgam is about 15 km from Srinagar, roughly 30–40 minutes by road, via Chadoora and the western valley roads. Shared Sumos and local buses run frequently from Srinagar. The district roads are generally good; the routes up to Doodhpathri and Yusmarg are narrower mountain roads.
Auto-rickshaws and shared Sumos cover the town and nearby villages; agree fares before boarding (₹40–₹100 for short hops). Local buses link Budgam with Srinagar, Chadoora, Charar-i-Sharief and the meadow roads. The town centre is walkable. For Doodhpathri and Yusmarg, a hired taxi is most practical.
