About Baramulla
Baramulla is a historic town and district headquarters on the banks of the Jhelum River in north Kashmir, about 55 km west of Srinagar. One of the oldest settlements in the valley, it was for centuries the principal gateway between Kashmir and the regions to the west via the Jhelum Valley road, and its riverside bazaars, old wooden bridges and mixed Muslim–Hindu–Sikh heritage reflect that crossroads past. The town's name derives from "Varahamula," and it carries deep significance in both Kashmiri Hindu and Sufi tradition.
Today Baramulla is a busy market and administrative town and the western railhead of the Kashmir Valley line. For travellers it works mainly as a base for excursions into north Kashmir — Gulmarg's ski slopes, the Wular Lake, and the apple-orchard country of Sopore lie within easy reach — rather than as a sightseeing destination in itself. The Jhelum embankment and the old town quarters reward a slow wander.
The climate is temperate: warm, comfortable summers (April–September) are the best time to visit, autumn turns the orchards and chinars gold, and winters are cold with snow that makes nearby Gulmarg a ski destination. Heavy snow or rain can disrupt mountain roads, so check conditions in winter and the monsoon shoulder.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar (IATA: SXR), about 50 km south-east. A taxi to Baramulla costs roughly ₹1,500–₹2,200 and takes 1.5–2 hours; shared taxis and buses from Srinagar are cheaper.
By Train
Baramulla is the western terminus of the Banihal–Baramulla Kashmir Railway line, with frequent DMU services to Srinagar, Anantnag, Qazigund and Banihal. It is a convenient and scenic way to travel within the valley. The valley line connects to the national network via the Banihal tunnel link; check current through-services on IRCTC.
By Car / Road
Baramulla is about 55 km from Srinagar on NH 1 (the Srinagar–Uri highway), roughly 1.5 hours by road. Shared Sumo taxis and JKSRTC/private buses run frequently from Srinagar's bus stands. The Gulmarg turn-off at Tangmarg is about 25 km away. Roads are generally good but can be slowed by winter snow.
Auto-rickshaws and shared Sumos cover the town and nearby villages; negotiate fares in advance (short local hops ₹40–₹100). The compact old town and riverfront are walkable. Local buses connect Baramulla with Sopore, Uri and Tangmarg. There is no formal ride-hailing network, so rely on taxi stands.
Things to do

Wular Lake (~from nearby Sopore) — one of Asia's largest freshwater lakes, a birdwatching site a short drive north.
Day-trip to Gulmarg for skiing, the Gondola cable car, and alpine meadows (about 1.5 hours via Tangmarg).
Birdwatching and boat outings on Wular Lake near Sopore.

Cafes & Nightlife
Kahwa (saffron-and-almond green tea) and noon chai (pink salt tea) are the staples, served in homes, bakeries and tea stalls. Bottled or boiled water is advised for visitors. Alcohol is not part of local life and is generally unavailable.

- Budget: simple guesthouses and lodges in town, roughly ₹800–₹1,500 a night.
- Mid-range: highway and town hotels, roughly ₹1,800–₹3,500 a night.

What to buy
Baramulla's bazaars sell Kashmiri staples — pashmina shawls, woollens, walnut-wood items and dried fruit. The surrounding district is one of Kashmir's main apple-growing regions, so fresh and dried apples, walnuts and almonds are good buys. Bargaining is normal in the open market; government emporiums offer fixed prices and quality assurance.
