Gardabaer

Garðabær is a modern residential municipality in the Capital Region, known for its excellent quality of life, green spaces, and coastal location. It is primarily a commuter town for Reykjavík but has its own distinct character, with the historic Bessastaðir estate — the official residence of the President of Iceland — located within its boundaries. The area was first settled in the 9th century and today offers lovely coastal walking paths, a golf course, and a relaxed suburban atmosphere.

Climate

Same as Reykjavík — subpolar oceanic with cool summers (9–14°C) and mild winters (−1–3°C). Unpredictable weather with frequent rain.

Garðabær is about 15 minutes southeast of Reykjavík by car. Strætó bus routes 1, 21, 22, and 24 connect from Reykjavík. From Keflavík Airport, take the Airport Express to Reykjavík then transfer to a local bus, or rent a car.

Garðabær is best navigated by car or bicycle. The centre is walkable. Bus connections within the municipality are adequate but less frequent than in Reykjavík.

Bessastaðir — the official residence of the President of Iceland, a historic estate dating to the 13th century. The grounds are open to the public on weekends and offer views across Faxaflói Bay. The coastal walking path (Garðabæjarströnd) along the sea.

Tour the grounds of Bessastaðir (open Sunday afternoons for guided tours in summer). Walk the coastal path along Garðabæjarströnd. Golf at the Garðabær golf course. Visit Urriðaholt, a residential area built around a protected nature reserve with walking trails and birdlife.

Garðabær has several casual restaurants and cafés. The town is close to Reykjavík and Hafnarfjörður's dining scenes. Try the local bakeries for traditional Icelandic pastries.

Garðabær is primarily residential with limited nightlife. Most bars and nightlife are in Reykjavík, a short drive away.

Garðabær has limited tourist accommodation. Most visitors stay in Reykjavík or use the town as a convenient base for a rental car visit to the Capital Region.
