The region has a rich history tied to coffee cultivation, which has been the primary economic activity since the late 19th century. The climate is tropical with temperatures averaging 23–27 °C, and the rainy season runs from October to February. The surrounding mountains are covered in cloud forest, harbouring diverse wildlife.
