Pico Bonito National Park
Atlántida, Honduras
Why visit Pico Bonito National Park?
Pico Bonito National Park is Honduras's largest protected rainforest, covering approximately 107,000 hectares of primary and secondary tropical forest, cloud forest, and river systems on the northern slopes of the Nombre de Dios mountain range. The park's highest point reaches over 2,400 metres and its terrain plunges dramatically from alpine cloud forest down through successive forest zones to the hot, humid lowlands just a few kilometres from the Caribbean coast near La Ceiba. This extraordinary vertical range — from roughly 50 metres above sea level to the summit — is what makes Pico Bonito one of the most biodiverse national parks in Central America.
The park is internationally recognized for its birdlife. Over 400 species have been recorded within its boundaries, making it among the finest birding destinations in the Western Hemisphere. The lovely cotinga, toucans (including the keel-billed and collared aracaris), the great green macaw, the harpy eagle, the resplendent quetzal in the higher elevations, and extraordinary concentrations of hummingbirds, tanagers, and antbirds are among the marquee species. Beyond birds, the park shelters jaguars, tapirs, pumas, ocelots, giant anteaters, and five species of wild cat, though large mammals are rarely seen by casual visitors. The Río Cangrejal, which drains the park's northern slopes, is one of the best white-water rivers in Central America.
The dry season from February to April is the best time to visit for trail hiking, as paths become dangerously slippery when wet. However, the park's rivers run most powerfully and dramatically after rain, making October and November the preferred window for white-water rafting despite the unsettled weather. Year-round, the park's interior is hot and humid at lower elevations; temperatures drop significantly with altitude. Entrance fees as of 2023 range from US$8–10 depending on which entrance you use (considerably less for Honduran citizens).

By Plane
The nearest airport is Golosón International Airport (IATA: LCE) in La Ceiba, approximately 12–20 km from the park's main access points depending on which entrance you use. From the airport, take a taxi toward the Yaruca road / Río Cangrejal corridor. Most lodge operators arrange airport pickup.
By Car / Road
The park's most used access is via the Carretera de Yaruca, which leaves La Ceiba heading south along the Río Cangrejal. Several eco-lodges and tour operators are located along this road at Km 7–10; from La Ceiba city centre, the drive takes approximately 20–30 minutes. A taxi from downtown La Ceiba to the lodge cluster along the Cangrejal costs approximately L100–L150. Buses from La Ceiba do run toward the Yaruca area but are infrequent and do not stop at the main lodge access points; for independent travellers without a vehicle, arranging transport through a lodge or tour operator is strongly recommended. The road is paved to a point and then becomes rough gravel; after heavy rain, a 4WD vehicle is advisable.
There is a secondary access point on the southern (Yoro) side of the park, but for Caribbean-coast visitors the northern Cangrejal approach is standard.
The park itself is explored on foot along its trail network. There is no internal road system for visitors; hiking is the only way to reach waterfalls and interior forest. For the Río Cangrejal, tour operators provide transport from their lodges to put-in points. Within the park's boundaries, the FUPNAPIB (Fundación Parque Nacional Pico Bonito) visitor centre near the northern access is a useful orientation point. Trails vary from well-maintained lowland paths near the lodges to steep, demanding routes at higher elevations that require a guide.
What are the things to do?
El Bejuco Falls — the most rewarding of the park's waterfall hikes; a challenging trail leads to falls surrounded by swimming holes. Bring sturdy footwear, water, and allow a full morning.
Unbelievable Falls (Cascada Increíble) — a tiered waterfall reached by a moderate hike, with a swimming hole at the base. More accessible than El Bejuco and suitable for moderately fit walkers.
Cascada Zacate — a short hike up to this waterfall near the lodges. Swimming is not permitted as the community downstream uses the stream as a drinking water source; the waterfall itself is still beautiful to visit.
Lowland forest birding trails near the lodge cluster — the area around Km 7–10 on the Yaruca road has several accessible trails where the birdlife is exceptional, particularly in the early morning. Many species, including multiple toucan species, the lovely cotinga, and dozens of tanager and hummingbird species, can be seen without deep-park penetration.
Birdwatching — the single most popular activity in the park. Every lodge in the Río Cangrejal area offers guided dawn birding walks; most guides are FUPNAPIB-trained and highly knowledgeable. Sightings of 80–120 species in a morning are reported by dedicated birders. Recommended to bring binoculars; guides often have a telescope.
White-water rafting on the Río Cangrejal — the river offers Class II–IV rapids through a spectacular jungle gorge. Omega Tours Adventure Company (+504 9745-6810) and Hotel Rio Rafting (+504 9946-7994, [email protected]) are long-established operators running half-day and full-day trips. Villas Pico Bonito (+504 449-0045) also offers rafting alongside other activities. The season for best conditions is generally October through March when flow is highest; the river runs year-round but may be too low for rafting in the driest months.
Hiking the park's trail network — a range of trails covers different elevations and difficulty levels. The shorter trails near the lodges are manageable independently; routes into the higher forest require a registered guide both for safety and navigation. FUPNAPIB can connect visitors with certified local guides.
Day visitor access at Villas Pico Bonito (Km 7, Carretera de Yaruca; +504 449-0045) — the lodge welcomes day visitors who can use the pool, hike their private trail network, climb lookout towers over the canopy, and dine at the jungle restaurant. A good option for travellers based in La Ceiba who want a structured introduction to the park.
Mountain biking — Villas Pico Bonito and Omega Tours offer mountain biking trails through the park's lower slopes and along the river road.
Zip-lining — canopy zip-line experiences are offered by Villas Pico Bonito alongside rafting and hiking packages.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Dining within the park is limited to the restaurants at the eco-lodges; there are no independent restaurants or sodas inside the park boundaries.
Villas Pico Bonito restaurant — the lodge restaurant overlooks the waterfall and jungle and serves Honduran and international dishes. Open to day visitors; mains in the range of L200–L400. Reservations recommended for non-guests.
Hotel Rio restaurant (+504 9946-7994) — the bar and restaurant at Hotel Rio has views over the river, mountain, and a nearby waterfall. Serves Honduran staples and fresh food with an emphasis on the local setting.
Omega Tours Eco Jungle Lodge (+504 9745-6810) — in-house meals included for lodge guests; non-guests should enquire in advance. Jungle setting on the Cangrejal.
For self-catered options, bring food from La Ceiba. Vegetarian options are available at most lodges but should be requested in advance.
Where to drink?
All lodges provide purified drinking water or bottled water. Do not drink directly from rivers or streams within the park without treatment, even in areas that appear pristine — agricultural runoff enters some waterways upstream. Bring a water filtration bottle or purchase bottled water at your lodge or in La Ceiba before arrival.
Lodge bars serve Salva Vida beer, soft drinks, and basic cocktails. The bar at Hotel Rio is a particularly atmospheric spot for a cold drink after a day on the river.
